Terri Schiavo's Family Continues Effort to Block Jack Kevorkian UF Speech

Gainesville, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The family of Terri Schiavo is continuing its efforts to block a speech by Jack Kevorkian scheduled for the middle of next month. The speech would be the first for the former assisted suicide crusader following his release from prison for killing a disabled man and showing the death on national television.

Kevorkian would speak to students at the University of Florida on October 11 and receive $50,000 for the talk, as long as his parole officers approve the trip.

The family of Terri Schiavo has been leading an effort to stop the speech by gathering petitions from concerned citizens so Kevorkian doesn't get a platform in their home state.

They don't want the former pathologist telling students that people with disabilities should be killed, like their sister, rather than receiving appropriate medical treatment or rehabilitative care.

Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, told LifeNews.com, "We have collected thousands of petitions (and they are still coming in) to deliver to the Office of the President of the University of Florida."

"We're demanding the University rescind its offer to pay $50,000 for Kevorkian to address the students," he added.

"Despite the ongoing message of death spreading through our society and those, like Jack Kevorkian, who attempt to justify killing the most vulnerable among us, we are committed to fight against this death-obsessed culture and spread Terri's legacy of life, hope and love," Schindler explained.

He said there is still time for pro-life people and others worried about Kevorkian's pro-assisted suicide message to sign a petition asking the University of Florida to cancel the speech.

...............It is the state Terri Schiavo was in when her husband, Michael Schiavo, asked in 2005 that her feeding tube be withdrawn, which resulted in the woman's death. She was a Catholic, as were her parents, who wanted the device to remain intact.

Prominent Catholics split over the issue. Some bishops said removing the feeding tube would constitute euthanasia. But other well-respected theologians said Catholic traditions allow patients to stop treatments that are overly burdensome.

Religious uncertainty was so pronounced that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote to Rome in April 2005 requesting a response to two questions.

Is the administration of food and water to a patient in a vegetative state morally obligatory, the bishops asked, and does it make a difference if a patient is permanently unconscious?

Last week, the Vatican's highest theological body responded.

Yes, giving food and water to a patient artificially is a basic means of maintaining life and therefore morally obligatory in most circumstances, it wrote. And no, this obligation doesn't change if a patient has no hope of recovery.

That settles where Rome stands, but it leaves open a host of practical and religious questions.

From a practical standpoint, Catholic health-care institutions—including 615 hospitals and 511 skilled nursing homes across the U.S.—may now have to alter practices.........................

How many of us, at the time of Terri Schiavo's death, actually heard even so-called "good Catholics" say that they should just let her die because "no one should have to live that way" and other nonsense like that? The real message of this declaration is that no one should have to think that murderous way any more.

The Vatican has spoken with the clear voice of conscience and has also vindicated all of us who fought for Terri's life and dignity, not because we were pro-life activists, but because we are Catholics. Anyone who advocated her death in 2005, whether by sloppy reasoning or culpable agreement with the atrocity, needs to seriously repent and re-evaluate his conscience in light of the Church's teaching. After this declaration, there is no excuse for not getting it right.

Most culpable of all were the so-called "Catholic" theologians, false priests, such as Richard McBrien and John Paris, who shamelessly advocated Terri's death when she was being sold to her killers for thirty pieces of silver. Now that the CDF has made clear what any child knows, this would be the time for them to take a refresher course on actual Catholic teachings.

The media is still at it, reminding about Terri. They shout, "Can't you see, Fred, that albatross tied around our media necks?"

Over the last week, Thompson's statements have created controversy, fueling the perception among some that he is not fully engaged.

When asked in Florida about his views on the Terri Schiavo case, in which Schiavo's husband battled her family to end her life support, Thompson said, "I don't remember the details" of a controversy that became a cause célèbre among religious conservatives. He also left open the possibility of oil drilling in the Florida Everglades, prompting rival Mitt Romney to say later: "You're kidding. . . . The people of Florida would never support such a thing," according to an NBC News report. Just yesterday, he told NBC News, "I don't know anything about" the highly publicized case of six black teenagers initially charged with attempted murder in Jena, La., where thousands marched in protest with top civil rights leaders.

Now I understand the meaning of OpEd especially at this website. That evasive term gives us trouble sometime as to its meaning but I think I cracked the puzzle. It means Opposite of Edification. (Or is it Opposed to...?)

St. Petersburg, FL(LifeNews.com) -- The former husband of Terri Schiavo has decided to close down the political action committee he created to go after pro-life lawmakers who sided with Terri's family in their efforts to save her life. The decision comes after several run-ins with the Federal Election Commission for problematic reports.

After ordering her painful two-week-long starvation and dehydration death in March 2005, Michael Schiavo created the PAC to target pro-life lawmakers who tried to stop him from killing her.

Schiavo says on the group's web site that the PAC limited his ability to speak out about his viewpoint on Terri's death and that he doesn't like asking for money for the political group to continue.

Judge Lee Haworth addressed the crowd of more than 30 spectators in the Desoto County courtroom. He demanded order and silence from the observers, many of whom had traveled far in support of Arcadia resident Nancy Grant. This, the fourth and final day of the trial, might raise tensions, so Haworth warned everyone he would brook no disturbances, not even murmurs or untoward facial expressions.

He had good reason for concern, according to Bob Hurt, one of We the People of Florida and an observer present at the trial. Grant, a grandmother of four children, ages 4 to 7, stood trial for 19 criminal counts of unlicensed practice of law. She could get 95 years in prison if the jury found her guilty. The 20 members of We the People of Florida there in her support would not like a guilty verdict.

"Haworth seemed to know the jury of five women and one man would find her guilty," Hurt said.

Terri Schiavo has been dead for 21/2 years. Her parents and siblings now have an answer on an important question: Was her death natural and moral, or not?

The Vatican’s answer: Not, on both counts.

No doubt you remember the Schiavo case. The Florida woman collapsed and went into a coma in 1990 and was later diagnosed as being in a permanent vegetative state. Her husband, Michael, won a malpractice settlement, used at first for her care at a nursing home, then later sought to have her nutrition and hydration tubes disconnected because, he said, she told him she wouldn’t want to live that way.

Terri’s parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, fought this in the courts for seven years but ultimately lost. The Florida Legislature and even Congress would eventually get involved, but the tubes were disconnected, and Terri died in March 2005.

About four months after her death, U.S. Catholic bishops asked two questions of the Vatican. Last week, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a response. (The Vatican’s wheels grind slowly but exceedingly fine.)

The first question: “Is the administration of food and water (whether by natural or artificial means) to a patient in a ‘vegetative state’ morally obligatory...?”

Answer: Yes. Even by artificial means, food and water is “ordinary and proportionate means of preserving life” and therefore obligatory, said the Vatican.

Second question: “When nutrition and hydration are being supplied by artificial means to a patient in a ‘permanent vegetative state,’ may they be discontinued when competent physicians judge with moral certainty that the patient will never recover consciousness?”

Answer: No. Because a person in a permanent vegetative state is “a person with fundamental human dignity,” he or she must receive “ordinary and proportionate care,” according to the response........................................

Fred Thompson made two mistakes regarding Terri.

First, he should have recognized the Terri issue was one of solid pro-life, a stand essential to a conservative candidacy.

Second, he miscalculated the resolve of the media. For, like a snarling mouse protecting its wound, the media for two and a half years have suffered the burden of Terri's Legacy tied 'round their shoulders. It is certain they would pounce on anyone opening their wound and will hang on with locked jaws.

Perhaps realizing now the gravity of these two missteps, he will rapidly take the lesson to heart and find out what really happened with Terri.

Lobbyist Fred Thompson continues to bumble and stumble across the campaign trail after a lackluster campaign rollout. This week he showed that he just hasn't done his homework on many issues, enforcing the belief that he's just not up for the job. Thompson said he would participate in a New Hampshire debate that had already been canceled, that he didn't know enough to comment on what he would have done regarding Terry Schiavo, and was caught completely off guard when asked about drilling for oil in the Florida Everglades, despite it being a major issue in the state for years. These major gaffes could explain why conservative pundits are panning his performance and recent polls show that Thompson's announcement didn't give him a bounce in the polls. The truth is, the right gets their Phony Outrage Base to pounce at every opportunity. They’ve condemned everything from the “War on Christmas” to the Terri Schiavo ordeal to botched jokes to scarves sold at Urban Outfitters. Neo-conservatives pretend to get angry at an issue and, in doing so, make the Democrats look weak. (That’s why the Iraq war resolution was supported by a bi-partisan consensus in the first place. No one was allowed to look at the intelligence objectively. If you didn’t vote in favor of the invasion, that meant you didn’t support the troops. Or better yet, you were inviting another 9/11.)
