Gainesville, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The family of Terri Schiavo is continuing its efforts to block a speech by Jack Kevorkian scheduled for the middle of next month. The speech would be the first for the former assisted suicide crusader following his release from prison for killing a disabled man and showing the death on national television.Kevorkian would speak to students at the University of Florida on October 11 and receive $50,000 for the talk, as long as his parole officers approve the trip.
The family of Terri Schiavo has been leading an effort to stop the speech by gathering petitions from concerned citizens so Kevorkian doesn't get a platform in their home state.
They don't want the former pathologist telling students that people with disabilities should be killed, like their sister, rather than receiving appropriate medical treatment or rehabilitative care.
Bobby Schindler, Terri's brother, told LifeNews.com, "We have collected thousands of petitions (and they are still coming in) to deliver to the Office of the President of the University of Florida."
"We're demanding the University rescind its offer to pay $50,000 for Kevorkian to address the students," he added.
"Despite the ongoing message of death spreading through our society and those, like Jack Kevorkian, who attempt to justify killing the most vulnerable among us, we are committed to fight against this death-obsessed culture and spread Terri's legacy of life, hope and love," Schindler explained.
He said there is still time for pro-life people and others worried about Kevorkian's pro-assisted suicide message to sign a petition asking the University of Florida to cancel the speech.
The petition can be found at the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation web site.

He said he wasnt going to do any of this again, where is the statement by him he wants to continue with his machines? It is comforting that you trust a convicted murderer who has no remorse for his actions.

I am sure many haven't and are leading perfectly normal lives. There you go again, sticking up for convicted murderers as if they deserved normal lives to begin with. So far, I haven't seen you shed a tear about any of the victims like you do the murderers. Correct?

I am sure many haven't and are leading perfectly normal lives. Do explain how a multiple murderer can lead a "normal" life.

Do explain how a multiple murderer can lead a "normal" life. And for that matter, how can a murder victim lead a "normal life"?

The culture of death doesnt give a damn about its victims. Sort of makes one wonder where these creatures come from, doesn't it?

My understanding is that Kevorkian acted on informed consent. If I am mistaken, please enlighten me. If his "patients" were clinically depressed when they made the decision for suicide, they were non compis mentis and their consent was as valid as a consent signed by a guy tripping on acid.

Bikerman, before you convince yourself that Kevorkian is filling a real need or discussing something that deserves debate, see info from a real nurse who cares for the dying in post 143. UF might as well have a guy come in and pontificate on how desperately our country needs to have a Weasel Stomping Day holiday, because we need assisted suicide about as much.

For your information My wife is a nurse who works in critical care and watches as family's disregard the dying wishes of the elderly who are being eaten alive by disease and have no chance in hell of coming out alive their meager savings for the surviving spouse fading because of the so called heroics by the bleeding hearts and do gooders who want to postpone their death by artificial means knowing they didn't want to die this way and signed their living wills. They all end up dying shortly after being put on so called artificial means.

they weren't killed in cold blood they were WILLING victims who made the discussion to end their OWN lives and because of Dr K were able to see their wishes come true. This wasn't an abortion. That I do not support but letting adults chose how they want to die I do support.Case closed.

they weren't killed in cold blood they were WILLING victims who made the discussion to end their OWN lives and because of Dr K were able to see their wishes come true. Many of them were simply depressed, suffering from a TREATABLE condition, and in all probability their "dream" was to ease their depression, not end their lives.
You make Dr. Death sound like Santa Claus.

Give me a break.
First, there is a big fat difference between refusing medical care and having a doctor kill you.
Second, society has made provision for these people to control their medical care through the living will, DNR and other provisions. The fact that there are families who ignore these provisions does not mean that we need a new, radical and drastic provision for them to ignore, it means we need to enforce current statutes.
Either you understand these concepts and choose to ignore these crucial differences, or you really don't understand them. If it's the latter, you have as much business pontificating on this issue as Gomer Pyle has designing nuclear plants.

Wag and bjs, see post 178.
Bikerman...How many of Kevorkian’s “patients” had been evaluated for clinical depression?

I think it is important we distinguish between a doctor easing a dying person who is absolutely terminal (stage 4 pancreatic cancer or the like), and in horrendous pain, out of life through painkillers, and Doctor Kervorkian. There are too many questions about his “patients”, many of whom were NOT terminal, and his motives. He appears to be a psychotic personality who gets some level of “thrill” out of killing people who are not necessarily dying. And he should be, and has been, condemned for it. I agree with you that someone from the life side should debate him, that it should be a two sided discussion.
