British military scientists sent hundreds of Indian soldiers into gas chambers and exposed them to mustard gas, documents uncovered by the Guardian have revealed. The Guardian understands that the British military did not check up on the Indian soldiers after the experiments to see if they developed any illnesses. It is now recognised that mustard gas can cause cancer and other diseases.
Many suffered severe burns on their skin, including their genitals, leaving them in pain for days and even weeks. Some had to be treated in hospital.
The trials have been thrown into the spotlight by newly discovered documents at the National Archives which have shown for the first time the full scale of the experiments.
The Indian troops were serving under the command of the British military at a time when India was under colonial rule.
The experiments took place over more than 10 years before and during world war two in a military installation at Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan. They were conducted by scientists from the Porton Down chemical warfare establishment in Wiltshire who had been posted to the sub-continent to develop poison gases to use against the Japanese.
The Indian tests are a little-known part of Porton's huge programme of chemical warfare testing on humans. More than 20,000 British soldiers were subjected to chemical warfare trials involving poison gases, such as nerve gas and mustard gas, at Porton between 1916 and 1989.

Some of the residual Brit stooges in India must feel so proud to have served in the British Indian Army after reading this. You would wonder why some would chose to serve their British masters rather then support freedom struggle. Know we know its because of all the Mustard gas inside their brains.

And I guess India should also be grateful for being allowed to send 3 million Indian soldiers to fight on the side of allies during WWII (20,000 of which have been reportedly gassed up)?

Those Indians who left Uganda for Britain were taken there as cheap labour by the Brits for building infrastructure over a century before.They pretty much had no link to their homeland barring their religion.

Those Indians did great in Uganda, they were the merchant class and much more. I would venture to say they rose higher than they would have had they remained in India
You should stop knocking the Brits. They brought more to India than they took away. Would you really want an India that the British had never set foot in? With no English language?
Today a lot more Indians (Hindus specifically) settle in the UK than the other way around. Thus you are doing a soft colonization of Great Britain. Of course the Muslims are 100 worse in their efforts to colonize Great Britain. I like Hindus, I don't like Muslims

Nobody’s knocking on the Brits-if they did something wrong,it needs to be told.Evading it is not the way out.Whatever contributions they made to India cannot be used to justify their misdeeds-of which there are numerous ,equally far reaching ones.
Would I want a Britain which gave a parliamentary system of governance as well as English-The opposite side is,would you want a Britain which pretty much destroyed your agricultural system by shifting to commercial products & also helped create a state which is the hotbed of International terror????Whatever Britain did was not out of benevolence-it was sheer expediency.If it were out of benevolence,the literacy rate in India in 1947 wouldn’t have been 20%.
According to SOME of our resident idiots here, we need to be thankful to the Brits that they colonized us and those few thousands of trivial episodes like randomly slaughtering hundreds of thousands of people, starving a few million, gassing even those dark skinned soldiers who fight for them.
What these people dont understand is that its only due to the fact that Indians are essentially pacifist by nature that colonialist Brits got away with wanton murder, rape and savagery of the worst kind. The same pacifism has transformed India into a soft target for modern day terrorism by Maoists and Islamists.
In the end, Britain should at least be thankful that its former “slave state” has shown better character in being gracious and not making them pay the current generation for the heinous acts of their ancestors.

Dennisw sees only the Hindus colonising Britian because, Hindus and (Indians of all faith in general) who are easily distinguished among other races by their darker colour are also among the richest people in Britain. And many people have trouble digesting that some one else is richer then them. Wealth often invites animosity. The very reason why the same Indians were specifically targeted by Idi Amin.

In contrast if you live in ghettos and leech on government doles like Muslims or Blacks, others may have no reason to envy you. You surprised why only Indians are targeted and are often subjected to racial abuse every where from Uganda, South Africa, Fiji, Guyana, Malaysia, Germany and also UK? Is all because Indians are the elites who work hard to earn their wealth.

Idi Amin, a muslim, called Indians “Jews of the East” to express his racial hatred for them before expelling the entire Indian population out of his country.
Mahathir Mohammed, another muslim, degraded all non-Malay people especially Indians and Chinese as second grade citizenry and likens them in a similar manner as “jews of the east”.
But you know what Gengis, all these things dont affect the common Indian on the street (except if he is a dangerous fanatic like Idi Amin). Several Indians still live in Malaysia and eke out an honest, decent living.
Thats because the brute force politics on the streets of any city/town of any first/second/third world country is governed by the law - if you are weak, you get beat.

Basically, its easier to pick on skinny, weak people of any minority race. Unless of course you know that they are organized.
If you pick on muslims, they will retaliate.

Typically only Asians and Jews are soft targets. And to make matters easy, both these people are typically non-thuggish and just want financial prosperity.
Indians run Kwik-e-marts and drive cabs, save every penny, so that their children could be doctors and engineers.
In the past, Jews used to run bakeries, stitch clothes and other such odd jobs for their kids education. Now their current generation is reaping benefits from the hard work of their ancestors.
Still, both are very easy targets.
