Fuses intended for use in a suspected plot to bomb US installations in Germany came from Syria through Turkey, the German interior minister said yesterday.
Wolfgang Schaeuble said the three suspects had received an order from Pakistan to act by mid-September. German security officials were also monitoring three men who had trained in a Pakistan camp for militants, but lacked the evidence to arrest them, Mr Schaeuble said. The threat from the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic Jihad Union, which claimed responsibility for the plot, has not been eliminated, he said. US installations remained a potential target.
Mr Schaeuble was in Washington for security talks with Bush administration officials and congressional leaders. "We know that fuses for these bombs ... came from Syria via Turkey to Germany," he said. "We know there are connections. We know that there is a clear network. The demand came from Pakistan (that) it's time to take action in the first half of September," he said. Mr Schaeuble reiterated his call for an overhaul of international law and for common transatlantic security policies.
He cited frustration with the issue of two German citizens and a permanent resident who were arrested in Pakistan after training in a militant camp. The three were returned to Germany, but authorities lacked a basis to detain them. "Now we have to watch them," he said. After a long debate over whether to punish the "intentions" of a terrorism suspect, Germany is likely to outlaw training in militant tactics such as bomb-building, Mr Schaeuble predicted.

Airports help Moroccan youth (Holland)

SCHIPHOL - Schiphol and Rotterdam Airport are going to provide a hundred disadvantaged Moroccan youth with training to become airport workers. The young people will start a five-week accelerated training programme in November.
Working with customers, platform activities and job application skills will all be covered during the course. A spokesperson for Schiphol confirmed on Tuesday a report on this in the Telegraaf. Upon completion of the training course, youth will be given a certificate allowing them to proceed to a trainee job or more extensive training. If they want to apply for a job immediately at that point they will be given assistance from the airports.
The police will select the candidates for the programme. In connection with the strict security requirements at the airport they must not have been in trouble with the law for any serious crimes. The project has been named after Princess Maxima. Rotterdam Airport has successfully organised such programmes in the past, once for Antilleans and once for Moroccans. This is the first time that Schiphol is participating as well.

Lawyer Sentenced for Terror Support to Teach at N.Y. University Conference

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A disbarred lawyer convicted of helping her client communicate with terrorists was scheduled to teach at a Long Island, N.Y., law school ethics conference, FederalReview.com reported.
Lynne Stewart, who was convicted in 2005 of providing material support to terrorists and received a 28-month sentence, was to speak at Hofstra Law School’s legal ethics conference, set for Oct. 14 to Oct. 16.

Her former client, sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to blow up five New York landmarks and assassinate Egypt’s president.
According to Hofstra’s Web site, conference speakers were expected to discuss “prosecutorial abuse, the challenges of representing prisoners at Guantanamo and attacks on lawyers who represent unpopular clients and causes.”

Michigan Catholic School Evacuated After Students Pass Out

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — An 860-student Catholic school was evacuated after some children became sick during a church service Wednesday, authorities said. At least two were taken to the hospital.
St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic School shut down classes shortly after 9 a.m. when at least three students passed out, said Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Director Rick Matott. Two of the children were taken to local hospitals, but their conditions were not believed to be serious, Matott told WJBK-TV.
Emergency medical crews and hazardous materials teams were sent to the school about 15 miles northwest of Detroit. Officials worked to determine what caused the children to become ill.
Bloomfield Hills fire crews could not find any indication that carbon monoxide was the cause, Matott said.
Students and staff walked across the street to Oakland Community College where parents were directed to pick up their children.

Senate Approves Symbolic Rebuke of Iran

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a measure sending another rebuke to Tehran, this one aimed at sending a message to the Islamic regime to end military tactics targeting U.S. forces in Iraq.
The vote came one day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told international leaders gathered at the U.N. General Assembly that Iran only seeks a peaceful nuclear program, and said that the conversation on the Iranian nuclear program “is now closed.”
The Senate, showing it was not convinced by Ahmadinejad’s proclamations, approved the nonbinding measure on a 76-22 vote. It was sponsored by Sens. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.
The measure — an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill under consideration in the Senate — is in response to growing concerns over Iranian support for insurgent activity in Iraq. Military officials say Iranian weapons have been discovered in insurgent hands, and U.S. officials have captured agents with alleged Iranian ties.

Man Carrying Rifle Arrested On St. John’s Campus

NEW YORK — One person carrying a rifle in a bag was arrested on the St. John’s Queens campus Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The man appeared to be wearing a President Bush mask, according to preliminary information from law enforcement officials.
Authorities asked students and faculty across the campus to stay indoors. There was a large police presence on the campus. Areas near the site of the man’s apprehension have been locked down.
Police said they were possibly looking for more suspects.
The St. John’s University Web site issued this advisory:
“A male with a rifle in a bag was apprehended on St. John’s Queens campus today. Public Safety officers quickly disarmed the suspect and have turned him over to NYPD. Additional information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.”

Police identified the armed man as Omesh Hiraman, a 22-year-old student from Guyana. They initially identified the weapon he was carrying as a musket, but later said it was a .50-caliber Wolf rifle, which holds one round of ammunition and uses black powder instead of cartridges. It was not clear if the firearm was loaded, but no ammunition was found in the bag. The weapon is seen as a niche weapon among hunters and sportsmen.”
