The boys are part of a loose-knit colony of scavengers, nearly 250 people who scramble over fetid hills of other peoples trash to eke out a living for their families and themselves. Most are younger than 16; some sleep here during the week to maximize the hours they can hunt for goods to sell. Many are related, from a few large clans, and they have a kind of organization, with a 23-year-old bulldozer driver who settles disputes, and a code of conduct, so that every diggers finds are respected.
For all the agonizing about nearby Hebron how far Israel should go to resolve competing Jewish and Palestinian claims to the city this desolate spot is a symbol of the impact of Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank and of the dire economic state of the Palestinian territories, where about a third of adults are without work. Many of the adults working the site have been unable to get jobs in Israel since 2000 and the second intifada, when Israel instituted stronger security measures to try to prevent suicide bombings.

Geesh, no wonder so many libbrils are agin 'em!
The New Yuck Slimes should be praising these boys as the Ultimate Recyclers and praising Israel for encouraging this behavior.
mound of trash!
Good one!
We should be sending out unemployed youths to mine OUR landfills. We’d increase recycling, reduce landfill space, improve employment, probably get some flamable stuff out of the landfill to burn in place of oil ... and without using un-natural machinery!

HEY Alouette let me get my violin out LOL!
When I was in Jr. High a kid came to school and that is what the family did for a living. He smelled awful but his last name started with a P so he was always sitting behind me in class. He did shower in the locker rooms but his clothes still smelled bad.
I was one of the few kids in the whole school who would talk to him so I knew that there were 9 kids and the older ones lived in a tent and the younger ones lived in an old school bus with the parents. I don’t think his dad could read or write so they traveled the country and got the good stuff out of the dump to sell.
I don’t think there was any such thing as free lunch back then so the school gave him a custodial job to pay for lunch. I guess they couldn’t make him work in the cafeteria because no-one would have eaten.
Oh my. Olmert kicks out the Jews from Yesha, oh what will they do for their dumpster diving?
