President Bush, along with Vice President Cheney, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and General Peter Pace, had a meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff this morning at the Pentagon. (Transcript)
After returning to the White House, the president delivered a statement in the Rose Garden about home financing and the recent problems involving the mortgage industry. Accompanying the president for the statement were HUD Secretary Alfonso Jackson and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. (Transcript)
But the biggest news today is, of course, the resignation of White House Press Secretary Tony Snow. He will step down on September 14 and will be succeeded by Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino. [Tony] leaves very big shoes to fill, said the petite Perino, and I only wear a size 6. (Transcript)
Tony actually announced earlier this month that he was planning to leave soon for financial reasons, but as usual the drive-by media--trying to create scandal where there is none--is portraying Tonys departure as shocking! and totally unexpected!, playing up the fact that today was also Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Roves last day on the job.
How do you feel about losing everybody? screamed Bill Plante to the president. I don't know, Bill. How do you feel about losing viewers at CBS?
President and Mrs. Bush send everyone best wishes for this Labor Day. (Transcript)
Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island

Quote of the Day:
Press Secretary Tony Snow (speaking to Helen Thomas): I think anybody who has watched knows how much I love working in this room, and especially love working with you, Helen. I have told people, when I'm your age, I want to be sitting in the front row making life a living hell for a press secretary. (Laughter.)

President George W. Bush visits with military personnel Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., after partcipating in U.S. Department of Defense briefings.

President Bush: The stakes in Iraq are too high and the consequences too grave for our security here at home to allow politics to harm the mission of our men and women in uniform. It is my hope that we can put partisanship and politics behind us and commit to a common vision that will provide our troops what they need to succeed and secure our vital national interests in Iraq and around the world.I always leave these meetings inspired by our men and women in uniform and resolved to do everything I can to support them. The brave men and women of our Armed Forces and their families are making heroic sacrifices to secure our country. America will honor these sacrifices by ensuring that our children and grandchildren inherit a more peaceful, just, and democratic world.
Thanks for the ping

I come by often to read, even when I don’t post.

Good evening!

Great photo of the day. Thanks for the ping

With HUD Secretary Alfonso Jackson, left.

President Bush: The recent disturbances in the sub-prime mortgage industry are modest -- they're modest in relation to the size of our economy. But if you're a family -- if your family is one of those having trouble making the monthly payments, this problem doesn't seem modest at all. I understand these concerns, and therefore, I've made this a top priority to help our homeowners navigate these financial challenges, so that many families as possible can stay in their homes. That's what we've been working on, a plan to help homeowners. We've got a role, the government has got a role to play -- but it is limited. A federal bailout of lenders would only encourage a recurrence of the problem. It's not the government's job to bail out speculators, or those who made the decision to buy a home they knew they could never afford.
Ohhhhhhhh, I love Toni Snow’s comment to Helen Thomas. I wish I could have been there. We’ll miss him. God speed his recovery.
THIS IS WHY I VOTED FOR THIS MAN....WOOOO HOOOO...GOOD GOIN' W!!!! NICE ANSWER!!!
