Sweet & Sour: A Day In The Life Of Hillary Clinton

Thursday Marked By Donor Controversy & Laughs With Letterman

(CBS) NEW YORK -- One day in the life of Hillary Clinton shows two very different sides of the New York senator and presidential candidate.

First, she was talking about a campaign donor controversy that has dogged her in recent days.

A few hours later, she was looking for a few laughs.

On Thursday, Clinton finally broke her silence, about a campaign donor who is a fugitive from California.

"We were all surprised by this news, and we have a procedure that we follow, and upon verifying it, we returned the money."

Her campaign had received $23,000 from Norman Hsu -- a man who in 1991 failed to show at a hearing on grand theft charges.

Clinton now says she'll give the money to charity.

"We will continue to analyze all contributions and take action as warranted, and I wish Mr. Hsu well," Clinton said.

The New York Times reports that Hsu also gave $60,000 to Gov. Eliot Spitzer's campaign -- and $50,000 to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Like Clinton, Spitzer and Cuomo are giving the money to charity.

Later in the day, the Clinton campaign lightened up. On "The Late Show With David Letterman," Clinton did not mention Hsu.

She did try to earn a few laughs by poking fun at her husband.

"He could constitutionally be a vice president, couldn't he?" Letterman asked.

"Apparently not. Believe me, he looked into it," Clinton quipped.

She also poked fun at her wardrobe during "The Top Ten."

"Number 1. One more pantsuit joke and Letterman disappears," the senator said with a laugh.

Clinton also addressed the idea that she could be the first female president, and said while she thinks resistance to a female commander in chief has diminished in the U.S., it hasn't disappeared.

"I think it's not so much that people don't think a woman can do the job, it's just that we've never done it before," she said.

"I'm not running because I'm a woman, I'm running because I think I'm the best qualified and experienced person who can do the job. But I know that it's a big deal that I might be the first woman president."

Shows such as Letterman's or NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" or Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" are eagerly sought by some politicians because they present a more unconventional forum for national exposure.

Bill Clinton appeared on Letterman on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He was a guest again in June 2005 to discuss his quadruple bypass heart surgery.

Isn’t Hillary’s court date in California concerning campaign fraud? I believe it’s Sept 7th. Not sure though.

Quagmire, I’m a big fan of Family Guy myself. I can hear the original Quagmire saying to Hillary on a blind date: “Oh God, Oh God, I thought you were a chick, oh no”
But seriously, she’ll have everyone wearing those suits Kim Jong Il wears if she gets a chance to rule over the US proletariate.

Notice that she keeps saying ‘we’, we’ll return the money, we were surprised by the news, etc....’. She’s hiding behind others...staffers, employees, whomever. The buck will never ever stop in front of Hill. (Some employee will be thrown under the bus.)

Wish he would have asked her "what have you done that makes you so qualified & experienced?"

Living for 8 years in a rented house doesn't make someone the owner!!

Any jokes about "human reconstruction?" Been a long time since we've heard anything about Hillary's plans for "human reconstruction" -- that'd be us little people.

Perhaps China's Communist Party Central Committee likes her ideas, wanted to be a Hill raiser, and bought tons of "apparel" from Mr. Hsu? Thus he had the money to help Hillary.

Perhaps Mr. Hsu arrived in NYC with a million dollars just in time to make a killing from Hillary's "price gouging cost shifting unconscionable profiteering" rants against pharmaceutical companies. That's how he got his money?

NY lotto?

If by this experience she means her foray into health care she would be well advised to shut up about it.

Can't wait for the debates. Hope the GOP candidate - whoever he is - has the guts to go after her.
