An author and investigative journalist says he isn't shedding any tears over the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who in the end had come under fire from both the left and the right.
Democrats and the mainstream media had been hounding Gonzales for months over his firing of eight U.S. attorneys. He was also criticized over the legality of the National Security Agency's surveillance programs. However, criticism was not limited to the political left. As conservative activist and best-selling author Jerome Corsi points out, the outgoing AG was criticized for his part in the unwarranted prosecutions of several Border Patrol Agents.
"You could have seen the political nature of the prosecutions that Alberto Gonzales was directing, and Gonzales should have been relieved of his duties early on because of his failure to support our Border Patrol when they're doing their legitimate job of enforcing the laws on the border," he says.
Corsi also accuses Gonzales of failing to prosecute officers of the Texas Youth Commission after a Texas Ranger investigation revealed sexual abuse at one of its detention centers. "The minor children including the boys were being abused sexually, largely by the male staff running this corrupt institution. And Alberto Gonzales' group turned it down at the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. [U.S. Attorney] Johnny Sutton turned it down."
Corsi says the prosecution of the Border Agents and the failure to prosecute the sexual abuse show not only the political nature of the Justice Department, but its complete disregard for laws that should have been enforced regardless of party affiliation. He regards these issues as bigger than the controversial decision to fire eight U.S. attorneys.
"The president has a right to fire the U.S. attorneys," Corsi points out. "Bill Clinton, when he came into office, I believe, fired them all and replaced them with U.S. attorneys who he wanted in place, [who were] more politically oriented," states Corsi.
The White House is not commenting on potential successors to Gonzales, but Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff's name has popped up, along with the former head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Asa Hutchinson, and Solicitor General Ted Olson.
The prosecutions would not have gone forward had it not been for the AG. His boss made the decision, however.
No Conservative is going to miss Gonzalez, but what gripes me is that the Dims are dancing in the streets, since they know they’ve set a precedent.
Hopefully our next GOP President will have a pair, and can tell them to take a hike when he fires U.S. attorneys.
So what he is saying after these borders agents broke the law and lied about it, the AG should have done nothing.
The government should not have granted immunity to this criminal in exchange for testifying against our first line of defense against invading criminals.
Gonzalez had no business accepting the appointment as AG. He was a lightweight. From his inability to be truthful for fear of criticism, to his blatant cultural pandering, Gonzales was miscast and way out of his league. Good riddance.
So what he is saying after these borders agents broke the law and lied about it, the AG should have done nothing.
I am not going to say any more about this.
” His boss made the decision...”
If there is any malfeasance that might make President Bush “eligible” for impeachment proceedings it is his treatment, through Gonzales, of these Border Patrol Agents doing the job they were sworn to do. The corollary to this malfeasance is his whole disregard for the immigration laws of the United States.
Now that Gonzales is no longer AG, can we deport him?
“Hopefully our next GOP President...”
Will there BE a “next GOP President”?!
Ed
I’d like to deport ALL of the illegals in this country and make that the #1 priority. I’d also like to see all muslims rounded up and placed in quarantine until some islamic country would take them off our hands.
While a travesty of justice to be sure, I believe these decisions were made by the US Attorney in the jurisdiction where the "crimes" occurred.
Plus, Corsi is an asshat.
The damned Democrats and their Republicrat allies appear to forget that Klinton fired ALL US Attorneys upon sliming into the White House.
How so much can be made by so little is not 'troublesome' as some idiot politicos are apt to say, it is downright angering!
