A front-page story in Wednesday's Free Press said "[Bob] Nardelli, Chrysler's new chief executive office and chairman, addressed more than 300 senior executives at an all-day meeting Tuesday at Hyatt Regency Dearborn." Actually, Nardelli was sick on Tuesday and didn't deliver the speech -- until Wednesday. Corrections in the print edition and online story don't explain to readers how the mistake was made.

Duh. The mistake was made because the article was already written ahead of time. They knew the agenda—because it was given to them—and they had a copy of the speech. What they didn’t have was an update from the event organizers that things had changed from the template...
And it's also good to know that some highly-paid editor at the Detroit Free Press used his carefully-trained and highly-developed journalistic sense to ensure that the readers of the Detroit Free Press got a story that was accurate.

I read about something similar in David Brinkley’s memoir book. When he was a young reporter, he was supposed to cover some event, but couldn’t get there in person for some reason. So he wrote up a story using general background information about the event and the organization. I think this is common practice in the news business, to “fill in the gaps” so to speak, when they lack the specifics they are looking for. And it’s nothing new.
That's precisely the point. They've been making up stuff for years.
I just read McCollough's book about the Johnstown flood. Even back in the 1800's, reporters were making up stories and sending them back to their home papers. Why was I surprised.

Well, it’s Gannett owned so you can’t expect much. Since the joint operating agreement to include the Detroit News happened, the dinosaur papers are garbage here.
