Nearly 80,000 Ammunition Rounds Seized From Home

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Authorities said they removed nearly 80,000 rounds of ammunition from the home of a South Bend man who warned that the world was going to end.

South Bend police and federal agents blocked off streets around Kevin Rieder's home for six hours Wednesday while they removed the ammunition.

Rieder, 38, was arrested Wednesday and charged with illegal possession of ammunition while subject to a restraining order, Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Schmidt said.

The restraining order had been taken out by an ex-girlfriend, Schmidt said.

Rieder told employees at a gun shop where he bought 18,000 rounds that he believed the world was going to end, officials said.

He was in custody Friday morning, awaiting a Tuesday bail and detention hearing.

If “world was going to end.”, why do you need ammunition? They say you can’t take it with you.

“List includes 7.62. Doesn’t specify whether it’s x39 or x51.”

7.62x39
It’s real cheap on the surplus market.

Some law enforcement agencies can not obtain ammunition.

Makes me wonder if this is all a creative set-up job by the 'ex'/local LEOs.

If the world really ends, it won’t matter whether you have one round or 1 million rounds.

Odd to have 80,000 rounds?

yup, that number seems a bit low.

I think part of the problem is that people seem to think that ammo takes up an enormous amount of space.

80,000 rounds can fit quite easily in a good size closet.

Was there any legal justification for confiscating his ammo?

depends entirely on what it is, .50BMG takes up alot more room than .223.

The USSC declined to review it - case over, he lost.

You mean we lost...

The thing that bugged me the most about this case was how as soon as the 3 judge panel of the 5th Circuit overturned the district court's ruling, Ashcroft immediately made it DOJ policy and considered it the law of the land without any of the usual vetting that goes along with a major change in departmental policy. Gun grabbing POS - how I hate that man.

Obviously. But in this case here I doubt we’re talking about .50BMG. What would 80,000 rounds of that run you? 4 or $500K?

Wonder how many rolls of tinfoil he had?

"80,000 rounds can fit quite easily in a good size closet."

Preferably not on the second floor of an old house though....

If a constitutional lawyer can't get that law thrown out, he's not worth his paycheck

As decided by 'United States v. Emerson' it's the law of the land.

If it was all Lake City M855, it would run about $31K for the lot.
