President George Washington established a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to only run for two terms, to establish an orderly transition of power and not try to become ‘President-for-life’ like some tin-pot dictator.

Anyone here surprised that the first to break this ‘gentleman’s agreement’ was a Democrat?

But the first to try was a Republican. Grant made a strong try for the GOP nomination in 1880.
