NJ is an asinine state. I think you can have one as long as its not bigger then the width of your hand or so my son is telling me. You can carry a buck knife as long as its outside of your pocket. Like on a belt. My buck knife is small but sharp . I can hook it on to the top of my pants or outside my pocket. Since I spend much of the summer camping I am never without it at my campground. Right now I don’t really care if its legal or not. I have a child & some of the time I am alone down there, I will protect my child & myself . I also have a flare gun in my trailer. I would certainly shoot someone if they were to break in & try to harm me. In this state when I had a man break into my house & my dobermans held the man down the police told me he could press charges on me for my dogs attacking him. Since the police didn’t come for 45 min my sister in law & I decided to let him go. I was 8 months pregnant at the time too.
I am astounded at this...the cops would let you be SUED by someone breaking into your house??
I just got back from visiting Atlantic City, and NJ is certainly a “garden state” in places, but what insane laws!
Thanks,
Ed

That’s not entirely accurate. Your hand has nothing to do with it. It’s the hand of the cop that matters. Cops are taught to judge a knife to be illegal if the “edge” is longer than their palm is wide. So if your hands are bigger than the cops hands, you could be in trouble.
Not all cities use that rule though. Some say 4 inches is the limit.
