I agree that the "evidence" described in the interview with the detective is slim. This is the kind of charge that would have easily been defeated by a lawyer.

Senator Craig should have just said, this is ridiculous, I'm not guilty, you are mistaken, I want to speak with a lawyer. And then hire a very good lawyer.

The charge would have never made it to court. Oh sure, there would have been papparazzi who appeared at the court case and tabloid news stories.

But ultimately, this detective could never have convicted the Senator of anything sexual from the description he gave. Now the cat's out of the bag. And you know cats.

But that is just the point. Had he fought the charge, he would be exactly where he is right now, accused of being a pervert. With his hometown paper already gunning to make him a gay charge against him, I can almost see him quickly giving up 500 bucks to see the affair die.
