The Left: Rep. Brian Baird, an anti-war Democrat, committed the unforgivable sin of seeing with his own eyes that America is headed toward victory in Iraq. Naturally, MoveOn.org has issued a fatwa against him.

Given Capitol Hill's scandals, it's refreshing to encounter a lawmaker who practices honesty even when it costs him. After a recent two-week visit to Iraq, Congressman Baird said he thinks our troops can and should finish the job there.

Baird, who represents southwest Washington, voted against the original Iraq War resolution, and he's no fan of President Bush.

"The invasion of Iraq may be one of the worst foreign-policy mistakes in the history of our nation," he wrote in a Seattle Times op-ed last week. But he added: "A precipitous or premature withdrawal of our forces now has the potential to turn the initial errors into an even greater problem just as success looks possible."

Baird warned what would happen if we followed the wishes of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid:

Well, well, so nice to see there's at least one honest Democrat. Maybe 2-3 if Joe Lieberman or Zell Miller still count, but they've been pretty much drummed out of the party by the leftist fanatical Shi'ite-heads.

That is what sets Lieberman apart from the rest of his party members. He has what they lack, and he's willing to take the leftist backlash for doing what's best for his country.
