NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Todd Marinovich, the former Los Angeles Raiders quarterback whose career ended in a mire of drug abuse, is facing a possible prison term after a weekend arrest in Orange County.
Marinovich, 38, remained jailed Wednesday on no-bail warrants for probation violation pending a Sept. 6 pretrial hearing. Police said he was skateboarding in a prohibited area near the Newport Pier boardwalk shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday and ran away when officers tried to stop him. He was found hiding in a carport about six blocks away.
Marinovich had a guitar case, and inside officers found about a gram of powdered methamphetamine, a metal spoon and a hypodermic needle, Sgt. Evan Sailor said.
Marinovich was arrested and pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor counts of unauthorized possession of a hypodermic and resisting a police officer.
A standout quarterback at Southern California in 1991, Marinovich was a first-round draft choice of the then-Raiders, where he played two seasons before being released because of an acknowledged drug problem. In eight games, he had eight touchdowns and nine interceptions.
He later played in Canada and for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League, leaving that team in 2001 after being arrested on suspicion of heroin possession.
In Orange County, Marinovich has had at least nine previous court cases, most of them involving drug-related crimes, and has spent several months in jail after pleading guilty or no contest to various crimes.

Back in the early 90’s he was going to take the NFL by storm. His dad was a football coach and had groomed him from birth to be an NFL QB. Strict diet, no sugar EVER, all football, all the time. He basically tried to build a pro athlete. Sort of like Tiger woods but without the big money payoff.

When he was young his dad was controlling nearly every aspect of his life to turn him into robo qb.
To quote his dad: “I told him when to eat, what to eat, when to go to bed, when to get up, when to work out, how to work out.”
The guy raised his son to live out his father’s dreams. Reminds me of the Lindsay Lohan saga.
I remember watching him crash with the Raiders. Like a slow motion train wreck.
I remember people talking about him when the first sports illustrated article came out. Robo QB. Trained from birth to be the perfect quarterback. Everything controlled by his father down to the last detail. No junk food. No fast food. No sweets or treats. Everything controlled.
You didn’t have to be psychic to figure out what was going to happen once he was out of his father’s control. Remove the ability of your children to make their own choices and their own mistakes while they’re growing and they’ll end up being clueless on how to take on the challenges of the real world once they’re out in it.
My bad he was the raiders strength coach.

Also a huge difference between Earl Woods and Marinovich’s dad.
Exactly. His dad screwed his mind up. Gave him every skill to be a QB and zero skills to be a human being. I know Todd should figure it out and try to become a regular person, but you can’t help but feel sorry for him given that, basically, his father never allowed him to acquire the skills to even do that.
Yeah - but if they ever develop an NFL seniors league for the drug addled - this guy is first round!
This guy was a punk when he played at USC. He threw temper tantrums on the field and on the sidelines as often as Rosie O’Donnell ranted against conservatives.

He's able to get six blocks away, but is unable to jettison the stash before hiding? Probably figured it was worth the risk because he would be out if he ditched it.
