Gaines aiming at Doolittle's seat
The Sacramento Bee ^ | August 30, 2007 | Peter Hecht

Roseville Assemblyman Ted Gaines announced today he is forming an exploratory committee to plot a run a for the congressional seat of embattled Rep. John Doolittle, declaring that voters have "lost faith" in Doolittle and that he can't win re-election.

"What I want the voters to know is that I'm putting the name forward...And I think change should occur," Gaines said in a meeting with The Bee Capitol Bureau. He added that he would be "a viable candidate" if he enters the race.

In a statement later, Doolittle responded, "Ted Gaines is sadly mistaken. After spending the last month talking to local voters I have seen strong support for my candidacy and a strong desire to focus on solving problems instead of plotting for political advantage. Ted Gaines has let political ambition and bad judgment convince him that he will rescue the Republican Party."

John Doolittle should step aside... we need to clean up the House as well as the Senate.

Ain't it grand. The only enemy John has in his district is the local rag (SacBee) yet another Republican is apparently able to leverage off those liberal, McClatchy morons in an attempt to displace a valued old work horse.

Someone needs to get their hands around the sensitive parts of Ron Nehring and start squeezing until some discipline and order is restored to the state party apparatus.

Doolittle nearly lost his seat last November and is probably the single biggest target for the rodents in CA. He needs to step aside and allow a better Republican to hold this solid GOP seat.

This is excellent news. Ted Gaines is a well-liked and solid conservative, a supporter of the state’s homeschooling community.

Now we need to get Doolittle to retire, along with some others (Larry Craig, Gary Miller, Jerry Lewis the politician, not the comedian).

The field is starting to get crowded.

Eric Egland has already made his announcement:

That’s according to DC Political Report. Nothing official I guess.

Gaines has been in office all of 9 months. He endorsed Giuliani. He thinks Steve Poizner is "probably our No. 1 candidate" for Governor in 2010. He reeks of RINO, to me. (but I don't know the guy.)

Doolittle is not a RINO.

.... a Giuliani supporter, thinks Steve Poizner should be the next gub.... etc.

Solid conservative? I dunno... I'm just askin'.

And we want to throw Doolittle overboard, because? Because the Rats want to take him out? That sounds like a pretty weak reason to cut and run.

For one thing, John Doolittle has given Democrats a shot at winning a strongly Republican district.

Also, he and his wife have engaged in questionable behavior, perhaps using his office for financial gain.

Ted Gaines is shooting himself in the foot here. IF Doolittle steps down then Rico Oller will likely clear the field. If Doolittle stays then Gaines will just be one of 4 or 5 “not Doolittle” candidates who will split that vote.

What "questionable behavior" has Doolittle "engaged in"?

The Dems want to launch a full on attack, just like they did with Pombo, and I'm seein' a bunch of Pubbies want to hide tail and run. What happened to standin' up and fighting and supporting our guys? This is starting to smell like a CRP take down of conservatives.

Thank you for putting me straight on that situation. I had heard Doolittle’s name mentioned recently and was not sure which way the wind was blowing.

"This is starting to smell like a CRP take down of conservatives."

One would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see how many conservatives are suddenly being "taken out" politically by hook, or by crook!

Gingrich, Delay, Pombo, Doolittle, and yes even Craig who should have stayed in the VIP lounge and never gone into a public restroom for ANY reason... PERIOD!!!

Conservative leadership in CONgress has just been decimated, from either set-ups, or self-destructive behavior. Every conservative has to know that they will be scruitinized and screwed at the drop of a hat and like Ceasar's wife MUST avoid the slightest appearance of evil!!!

They should also stand above all others in fiscal self-control and avoid the social and societal pull of "inside the beltway crowd!" Their spouses must also support such spartan and stringent self-control for the good of the conservative cause.

A lot of Democrats like to vote for some Repubs, thinking the Repub Rep will be fiscally conservative. They know it's not healthy to have a majority of Dems in charge of the purse strings!!!

Conservative Republicans who ascend to leadership do not have to acheive and maintain sainthood, but they can't slouch around liberally like the despicable Democrats, lest the MSM crucify them!!!

There slightly different shades of conservatism which can break out into horrible fights like the 1996 Primary fight between Rico Oller and Kirk Uhler running for state Assembly. EGD is right, Gaines and Uhler are almost identical in their shade of conservatism, Rico is more of a "take no prisoners" kind. Gaines and Uhler are more the Dan Lungren, Tom Sullivan shade, while Rico is more of a Limbaugh shade, IMHO.
