Richmond- Attorney General Bob McDonnell issued the following statement regarding today's immigration proposals announced by the Republican leadership in the General Assembly:
"Today, the Republican leadership in the General Assembly announced the outline of a broad set of proposals to combat illegal immigration in Virginia. It has become all too clear that the federal government has failed to adequately secure our borders, failed to enact meaningful immigration reform, and failed to adequately address the problems associated with criminal illegal aliens. Now, states and localities are rightfully determining the best measures by which to combat crime committed by illegal aliens.
This past January, I called on the Governor to allow state agencies to enter into immigration enforcement agreements with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I believe this to be a necessary and important action, and I have continued to call for it. Unfortunately, the Governor has repeatedly refused to execute these agreements. Localities are entering into these agreements however, and that is an important step.
Today's proposals by the Republican leadership are another important step, and will be the starting point for enacting legislation during this upcoming session of the General Assembly. Our office will assist with this effort to ensure that the legislation is both legal, and effective. For too long our citizens have been told that state and local governments cannot act on this public safety issue. That is not true. We can act, and in the absence of decisive action at the federal level, we must. "

It’s about damn time.
Richmond ping.
Finally, a little leadership on the illegal immigration issue.
All 140 General Assembly seats up for grabs this fall. Let’s see what Virginia, not the WaPo, has to say.
I wish that would happen in California, but Southern California is mostly Mexican. It will take the feds to control this state. Hopefully they will step up to the chanllenge but I doubt that Pelosi or Finklestien have the guts. They will use the Mexican vote to their advantage. The sad thing is, Mexican’s can’t see that they are being used.
Vote Bob McDonnell for Governor November 3, 2009
Unfortunately I anticipate that Fairfax (probably), Arlington (certainly) and Alexandria (most definitely) will become the counties of last refuge for our illegal alien lawbreakers.
On the other hand (one must be hopeful) maybe our very sizable *legal* immigrant population in Fairfax will drive them out, while the low-profile DC powerbrokers in Old Town will eject them from Alexandria.
That leaves Arlington, which is only third behind Bezerkly CA and the PRC (People’s Republic of Cambridge MA) as one of the most anti-American counties in the United States.
I’m sure Arlington will happily embrace its new bedraggled refugees from Prince William and Loudon.
Soon we’ll be building a fence at the Falls Church / Arlington border.
Yea - but our “esteemed” governor has stated clearly that he is against it - he doesn’t want to saddle State LEOs with doing the job the feds are supposed to do.
I live in Arlington and I agree with your assessment. We’ll be flooded with illegals (as though we don’t have enough of them already).
