Senator Craig Blames Idaho Paper for His Legal and Political Problems
Editor and Publisher ^ | August 28, 2007 | E&P Staff

NEW YORK In a statement to the press late this afternoon, Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho blamed the Idaho Statesman of Boise for his legal and political troubles stemming from his arrest in a sex-related matter at an airport men's room in Minnesota in June.

He denounced the longstanding probes by the Statesman -- he called it a "witch hunt" -- for inspiring him to plead guilty to the offense even though he said he was actually innocent. He said he had been "viciously harassed" by the newspaper. "I am not gay," he said twice. "I love my wife."

The Statesman had looked into allegations about Craig but did not run a lengthy report until today -- the day after his arrest in June became public. But Craig pointed to today's story, and suggested that the paper's probes and the "rumors" they produced had caused him to want to put the matter behind him -- so he pleaded guilty to the men's room charge and told no one about it. "In June, I overreacted and made a poor decision," he said.

Craig also said he would not step down as senator and still planned to serve his state in Washington, and walked away without answering questions from the media...."

Do not trust what you read in print or see on TV anymore.

How about what is printed on his signed and dated plea of guilt?

It seems rather clear this individual was attempting to get through this event in an effort to avoid bringing any further attention to this matter.

I seem to recall those Lacrosse players denying the charges and fighting them. Not accepting a plea agreement, keeping the arrest from his wife, and trying to make it all go away.

Having said that, I must say, based on his actions, it's hard to believe this individual is a state senator, as his conduct and his actions are not those exhibited by a credible, sincere, innocent person.

I've become cynical. I don't even find it hard to believe this of the characters of those serving in our higher offices. Not after Clinton.

The moment they stated bathroom, arrest, and Senator Craig I knew what was coming, and all evidence since has backed that assumption up.

“If Craig were to step down now just citing his lapse in judgement...the whole thing could go away politically. But, I do not believe he will. He gave all the signs today of really digging in and trying to maintain his political career.”

It will be up to the citizen Republicans in Idaho to fix this, then. GOP county committees can issue censure resolutions and a grassroots movement to replace him in the primary needs to take place.

I had little previous knowledge of this individual. After reading available reports, previous allegations, and the police report in this matter, it should be clear to most that this guy was just trying to get through this event without drawing anymore attention to it. Didn't work.

His political career is over in my opinion

Arrogant to the end. He is the typical Washington DC elitist. He still thinks he can outsmart the dumb old voters. Another reason for Term Limits. How come the President can only serve 2 terms and these bums have no limits? Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Besides, I don’t trust a man with a first name as a last name: George Michael, Elton John, etc.

Regards, Ed

I am basing my thoughts at this point on the police report and his guilty plea as recorded in court. He made the guilty plea...that's not news hype or a bad prosecutor.

At the very best, his judgement is so lapse that I do not want him as my representative for that reason alone...and that would be taking his word on everything...which at this point I am not disposed to do.

And, in any case, as I said, he had already lsot my support in the primaries because of his stance and attitude about the immigration issue.

He’s not a state senator...he’s the senior US Senator from Idaho.

>>If this guy wont resign, the repubs need to walk into the senate and demand a expulsion vote.<<

On what grounds?

>>The dems would have to either alienate their perverted base and vote for expulsion or they would have to defend craig, alienating the rest of the country.<<

The only knock the Dems have on him is that he’s a hypocrite. There is no way they vote to expel someone from the senate for tapping in his toe in a way that a cop thought was gay.

The words, “senior US Senator from Idaho”, almost make you want to cry. Soliciting sex in a public bathroom, is this the best America has to offer? What’s wrong with us? And this is not new news. This guy has been pulling this crap for years.

And the press totally bashes President Bush. I know the guy isn’t perfect, and I disagree with a few of his policies, but I respect him. I can’t say that for most of the scum in DC.

I thought it was his playing with the genitals of other men in bathrooms that got him into trouble.

(I bet news outlets are scouring old security videos)

The Dems don’t talk about family values, though. Craig is a total hypocrite.

But is there any chance he could have been set up.

If this had been an isolated incident, sure. But once you get an idea of how many allegations are out there and for how long, it seems inconceivable.

The Idaho Statesman reports on some of the other allegations here:

Please don't tarnish a great song by associating it with him.
