HYDERABAD: With cinemas figuring in the hit list of terror organisations, the city police have ordered their closure till managements ensure proper safety measures.

According to sources, a place of worship at Chaderghat, bus stands, super markets and theatres are the likely targets of terrorists.

Apart from cinemas, multiplexes like Prasad’s attract huge crowds and many of them lack proper safety measures. In fact, a crude bomb exploded at Odeon theatre at RTC crossroads during the second show in May last year. After that incident, a few cinemas had resorted to taking photographs of cinemagoers while some installed door frame metal detectors (DFMDs) to keep tabs on trouble-makers. City police commissioner Balwinder Singh issued closure orders to cinemas which haven’t installed DFMDs yet, and frisking by hand-held metal detectors. Also, filmgoers will not be allowed to take their luggage into theatres.

Police ordered the managements to install DFMDs, and carry out frisking and also a thorough check of premises between the shows. "No cinema can run the show till the security measures are put in place," the order said. Theatre managements were also asked to inform police immediately about any suspicious objects. The managements can also seek the assistance of local police in providing safety measures, he said. Meanwhile, Saturday’s twin blasts at the popular food joint Gokul chat bhandar and Lumbini park had its impact on several business establishments, which preferred to remain shut, though several outlets normally remain open on Sundays. Even the busy Karachi bakery at Moazam Jahi market remained shut.

“Remember folks, please turn off all bombs before the movie starts. Thank you for your cooperation.”

I guess one can no longer say that a movie bombed at the box office.
