To: Psalm_2
Our children, seven in number, have all been avid readers. They see all the Harry Potter hoopla, but have never asked for a Harry Potter book, and don’t want one. How is it that our children don’t go along with these fads?

I know that you know, Psalm_2, that children can be raised and trained in such a way as to ignore the fads of our times, fads like Harry Potter. Some parents are foolish enough to think that a child should never be told, “No!” But it is better to raise a Child from infancy on a structure of principle that minimizes (to nearly nill) the times you have to say “No” to child over 6 years old. Yes, it is possible for children 6 years and younger to detect serious flaws in morals and character.

Young children can understand the spiritual content in Harry Potter books and films - - it is an unclean spirit; devilish. We don’t expect the un-Christian world to try even one time to discern the difference between the spiritually clean and the unclean. We have a serious problem with professing Christians who will say that there is nothing satanic in Harry Potter, and can’t say “No” to their children. Deuteronomy 18:9-14 9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. 14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. 2 Timothy 4:3, 4 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Yes, 2 Timothy 4:3, 4 is good to know just in case you meet pastors who think that Harry Potter is just fine, along with ... 2Corinthians 11:13-15 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

I am conscious that I am butting into your discussion and I apologize in advance for doing so. Harry Potter is about as sinister to Christians as “Beowulf” and “The Iliad/Odyssey”, in my day-and-age. Full of heathen stuff, but plenty of harmless fun all the same.

My Mom and Dad raised me to be a Christian, which I still am, despite me reading Beowulf and Homer. If history, it was interesting-but-irrelevant history. If fiction, it was a rollicking-good-read guaranteed to build Character. But nothing more.

Kids aren’t stupid, unless we raise them to be stupid. They can easily discern fiction. Mine do.
