Never underestimate the power of the blogosphere and a quarter of a degree to inflame the fight over global warming.
A quarter-degree Fahrenheit is roughly the downward adjustment NASA scientists made earlier this month in their annual estimates of the average temperature in the contiguous 48 states since 2000. They corrected the numbers after an error in meshing two sets of temperature data was discovered by Stephen McIntyre, a blogger and retired business executive in Toronto. Smaller adjustments were made to some readings for some preceding years.
All of this would most likely have passed unremarkably if Mr. McIntyre had not blogged that the adjustments changed the rankings of warmest years for the contiguous states since 1895, when record-keeping began.
Suddenly, 1934 appeared to vault ahead of 1998 as the warmest year on record (by a statistically meaningless 0.036 degrees Fahrenheit). In NASAs most recent data set, 1934 had followed 1998 by a statistically meaningless 0.018 degrees. Conservative bloggers, columnists and radio hosts pounced. We have proof of man-made global warming, Rush Limbaughtold his radio audience. The man-made global warming is inside NASA.
Mr. McIntyre, who has spent years seeking flaws in studies pointing to human-driven climate change, traded broadsides on the Web with James E. Hansen, the NASA teams leader. Dr. Hansen said he would not joust with court jesters and Mr. McIntyre posited that Dr. Hansen might have a Jor-El complex a reference to Supermans father, who foresaw the destruction of his planet and sent his son packing.

The alarmist nonsense about global warming is statistically meaningless, to again repeat a phrase from the article.
Someone should ask the NYT, if the new numbers are statistically meaningless when compared to the old, that would mean that the reverse is true as well. So why the alarm when the old numbers were first reported?
Funny; those fractions of a degree were the basis of global warming. Now that they’ve been corrected they’re “insignificant”.
I got yer cardon credits for ya, right here...
Interesting, isn’t it. Reminds me of how everytime we have apparent abnormal cold temperatures it is blamed on global warming. There really is nothing that can’t be attributed to global warming. Kind of neat.
A central tenet of the scientific method is reproducibility. NASA and others who monitor the Earth’s temperature refuse to open their software code for inspection. This should be a red-flag in any peer-review situation. Now that an error has been found in the methodology, complete disclosure is more important than ever.
Hypocrisy, thy name is Al Gore.
What Steve McIntyre actually does is methodically check the quality of historic climate measurements and statistics that outfits like NASA, NOAA and IPCC use to come to conclusions on climate change. Hansen admitted publicly that McIntyre was right.
McIntyre regularly exposes flawed and “adjusted” data used by leading authorities to dramatize their arguments:
“Honey, not tonight, I have a global warming”
fyi
Exactly - so many jackals in the MSM made such a fuss over statistically insignificant differences when they thought it boosted the GW crusade. As for that charlatan James Hansen, now he hides behind whining about “court jesters” but Albore is one of the worst such clowns of all time and we don’t see James Hansen out there correcting Albore’s lies and exaggerations. No, Hansen is just another shill for the left and should have been fired long ago — real scientists could never behave as he does.

The Mainstream Media just love their Lying Global Warming Poster Child, James 'Handsome'
Hansen believes, as did Albert Einstein, that speaking out politically at key moments is part of a scientist's responsibility. He also rejects the idea that scientists should pose as completely objective fact machines that refrain from offering opinions that aren't purely scientific in nature (even about subjects that they know better anyone else). What's refreshing is that he makes no apologies for that. "There's a big gap between what is understood by the scientists at the forefront of the research, and what is known by the people who need to know," he says.

Ping me if you find one I've missed.
Exactly. Did you send the letter to the editor asking this question? Someone should.
Exactly. LOL!
Well, then doesn't it follow that their trumpeting of the original data was just as meaningless??? Rush was just illustrating absurdity.
So much for "science" in Lysenko-ized America.
