U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., blasted the "24-hour news cycle" Friday, saying that a barrage of coverage in a lengthy presidential campaign will turn off Americans.

Politicians used this newfangled media coverage to their advantage as a way to advance their personal political ambitions on the electorate. The Clinton's honed it to an art form to great success, and many others followed.
Since there is only so much actual "news" to be covered over any given 24 hour period, the media began to focus on politics and politicians ... who are more than willing to get up in front of a camera in order to advance their political careers. Hence the 24/7/365/4year 'election' cycle gained its roots.
Politicians are always in campaign mode, ....ALWAYS(!) ...., the only difference now is that their constant campaign mode is on television and radio and internet and everywhere else for all the world to see.
