statesmen one and all

I mean, seriously, is this a joke? George Washington would look at this bunch and say "What the heck did I bother for?"

That’s why I think it’ll be Evan Bayh. He presents himself in all the ways the other candidates cannot. I believe the deal’s already in place and he’s quietly waiting for his cue.

Hillary doesn’t need a VP to deliver the black or Hispanic vote or any other liberal vote. She already has that. She needs enough white, moderate vote to swing a purple state or a red state.

Bayh would deliver Indiana—a red state in almost every Presidential election. The midwestern appeal would also provide just enough necessary bleed-over to pull in Ohio. Bayh’s carefully crafted, albeit faux, “conservative’ persona would reassure moderate democrats leery of Hillary.

A two term governor of Indiana (a traditionally conservative state), and now Indiana senator, Bayh and his wife were very chummy with then-President and Mrs. Clinton. I cannot recall him ever being critical of Hillary, and any one who has, I think, can forget any chance at VP. Bayh’s proven himself a good and discreet soldier to the clintons, a valuable consideration to Hillary who cannot risk lightweights and loose cannons like Edwards or bumblers and slobs like Richardson or Dodd.

Bayh is polished, politically savvy, and his political bloodlines via daddy Birch could be an invaluable bridge to the mainstream D machine whose heirarchy still resents the clintons’ lack of pedigree.

Bayh carries none of the personal/political baggage the others do. Moreover, he presents the necessary bland but trustworthy and youthful executive image that would best complement—but not upstage—Hillary. He brings with him an appealing family with an attractive and poised wife and twins.

Remember, Bayh was actually in the presidential race....for all of one week, when he abruptly pulled out. The sudden reversal was way too early to be due to any legitimate assessment of chances. Certainly, at the time he was a far stronger candidate than every one of the candidates except Hillary. I strongly suspect he was told that if he cooled his jets, the VP slot was his.

I really hope I’m wrong, and that for the first time, Dick Morris is right. Richardson or Dodd would be a gift to the GOP.
