A round of applause, please, for former Virginia Sen. George Allen, who finally got likely GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson to hint when he plans his big announcement. Filling in for Richmond's WRVA morning host Jimmy Barrett, Allen just came out with it, asking the Law & Order star what's up.
Said the Fred, who's been testing the political waters: "Well, the water is pretty warm. I like the temperature a lot." He also told Allen, "It won't be very many more days" before he declares.
During the five-minute chat, Thompson addressed the complaints that he is taking too long to make up his mind.
"This is not an attempt to be cute or game the system," he promised. Thompson said instead that he's just working on more of an old school schedule, when candidates didn't announce until the fall before the election year.
And he said that running for president isn't something he's planned all his life. "I'm doing in a few months what people have taken a long, long time period to do," he said.
I’m going to pull this car RIGHT over, and you don’t want to see what happens when I have to pull the car over......
Sounds like a disease.
I went down on MLK boulevard and caught me The Fred, yo!
Fred’s biggest decision is not whether to run, when to announce it, who to finance it, who to run the campaign, who he needs to beat or who to send the toilet paper to when they s**t in their pants when they see his poll numbers after throwing his hat in the ring...his biggest decision will be choosing the right running mate!
And his campaign should be stimulating all the news organizations right now to start speculating who that will be even the day before he announces that he is in the race!
Huckabee’s a very good speaker - a little bit of Gingrich, a lot of Duncan Hunter; a good way with word, and a quick and clever wit. I’m glad I didn’t miss him.
FDT’s supposed to repeat later tonight (11:20PM EDT), lightening permitting.
Meanwhile, all us who are supporting REAL candidates, REAL men, are just fools according to Fred T. We, and our candidates, are playing by some new silly rules that he doesn’t have to abide by. He’s above all that. All the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the debates, all the straw polls, all the walking, talking, “ask me anything” town hall meetings. Fred doesn’t have to do all that silly stuff that the others planned for years and years if not all their lives. Fred is still deciding if he really wants to do this.
I never liked this guy and with each passing day, I like him less.
When did Fred first express an interest in getting into the race, or “testing the waters”?
Fred first showed interest about a possible run in early March. Fred announced his Testing the Waters phase in early June. There are indications that Fred will announce his candidacy in early September.
That's three months for Fred to consider a potential run and three months putting a campaign together in the Testing the Waters phase. Both are about average periods of time for a candidate as I alluded to earlier. I don't think that's debatable.
What Fred has of course done differently is to start the entire process later. I think that's a good thing. Your opinion may vary...
WWLD?
Incredibly ridiculous.
Good, three months plus three months pretty much validates what I said. Thank you.
LOL! You beat me to that comment I was just getting ready to say it.
Great minds...
As I pointed out earlier, and as it still seems to be going over your head, it took Rudy, Mitt, Huckabee and others much longer than what Fred has taken.
Your, "it takes most of us about two seconds to test the water temperature" statement remains a crock of DBM induced propaganda.
Enjoy.
When I cash my check from the NY Times each month, I’ll think of you.
