Politics: A couple of prominent Democrats have conceded that another terrorist attack on the U.S. would improve Republican election prospects. They're right, but it seems they don't even know why.

While campaigning in Concord, N.H., Sen. Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic presidential candidate, tried to make the point that the GOP has "mishandled" terrorism, actually making the world "much more dangerous." Instead, she inadvertently issued a confession.

"If certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism," Clinton said Thursday, "that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again."

Speaking recently to the New York Observer, Michael Dukakis, the Democrats' 1988 standard-bearer, speculated that "some crazy guy will blow up a building with three weeks to go" before the elections, "and then we'll be back in Bush-land again."

The former Massachusetts governor meant Bush-land as a pejorative, of course. But Bush-land is exactly where most voters would feel safe when under attack. Recall that even some Democrats acknowledged that the country was better off with President Bush than Al Gore in the aftermath of 9/11.

Americans have good reason to feel queasy about Democrats' commitment to fighting terrorism. Remember Sen. Barack Obama's response during the July South Carolina debate when he asked what he'd do as president if al-Qaida hit U.S. cities?

I'm not sure I agree w/ this. The press would LOVE to be able to report ad infinitum on an attack and the people (ie. Republicans) who did not prevent it.

"If certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism," Clinton said Thursday, "that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again."

She's not speaking to Americans here. She's speaking to al Qaeda. The message is: "Please lay off until after the election and I will deliver victory to you in Iraq." This is a deal, sub silentio, in the making--sort of like the treason Jimmy Carter attempted with Dobrynin before the 1980 election.

Hillary screwed up big time with that remark. Basically she told the country that terrorists would rather have do nothing Democrats in power so they (radical Muslims) can terrorize us without any retaliation.
