CBS) HAWTHORNE, Calif. Two children menaced by pit bulls in Hawthorne were safe Friday, but a woman running from the dogs broke her leg and a squad car being driven to the scene collided with another vehicle, injuring an officer and a motorist, police said.
A report that two pit bulls were menacing a 16-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother in the 2900 block of 141st Place at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue was received by Hawthorne police about 8 a.m., Hawthorne police Lt. Michael Ishii said.
An animal-control officer distracted the dogs with a chemical spray, and the children ran to safety, Ishii said.
No one was bitten, but a woman who ran from the dogs fell and broke her leg, and she was taken to a hospital, Ishii said.
Meanwhile, an officer driving to the scene crashed into another vehicle at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, he said.
Paramedics transported the officer and the other motorist for treatment of ''minor-to-moderate'' injuries, he said.
The dogs were returned to their owner, who lives in the neighborhood, and police issued a citation for violation of the leash law, Ishii said.
God bless you. Need a Kleenex? ; )
“Remember that the same media that has misled you into thinking that the pitbull is the most dangerous creature alive also is telling you that:”
Nobody has been misled into thinking that. Everyone understands that their are more dangerous animals. You just can’t find another with that tenacity and destructive potential in average suburban neighborhoods.
Wonder what sort of odds Vick would have given on the pit bull causing a police car to crash?
Got it on the first try.
What I don't understand is those who say they'll pre-emptively kill the dog. As PB owners themselves are wont to say "it's the owner, not the dog." I've always been a believer in eliminating root causes not symptoms.
Me too! I guess if I had a five year old child and my neighbor had an unruly PB I would send my kid out to play with a .45 strapped to his butt.
That's an hysterical, mostly idle threat for the most part. Fear combined with ignorance is at the root of these posts. Education is the solution to both, and there other posters here who have done an admiral job of posting facts and personal experiences for some years, but sadly, few are willing to actually examine the facts. Emotive ranting substitutes for thought around here too often in these threads. It's the sort of behavior one expects from ban-happy nanny-stater's, not conservatives. See the UK/Germany, or Denver for that matter. They can cling to their fear and liberal views; I'll keep my dog.
Regardless, it's become tiresome and I've better things to do this wkend than discuss the PB issue on FR. That poor horse is long dead. ;)
You conveniently leave out the fact that German Shepherds are listed as number 3, yet there are but 2 incidents in a ten year period separating them from the 4th, “husky type”.
There is a 39 incident spread between the #1 and #3, and a #22 incident spread between #2 and #3.
From 1991 through 1998, four deaths total were attributed to German Shepherds.
Animals were responsible for 18 deaths of farm youngsters from 1995-1997 (horses, cattle, dogs, swine)
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/childag/pdfs/FarmFatalYouth.pdf
Horses cause 219 deaths a year.
1. National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) estimated 105 deaths per year, but this would be low because many horse related injuries do not go to emergency rooms but to morgues (Bixby-Hammett, 1990). The figure 219 was determined using medical examiner figures and population (Bixby-Hammett, 1990).
From what I've been reading that cuts both ways. Have a great weekend!
>Yes the liberal media makes pitbulls attack.<
Is it possible, that by sensationalizing pit bull attacks, the media is at least somewhat responsible in attracting the type of person who actually wants a “mean” dog, that will attack people, and that can kill other dogs?
If you go into certain parts of the country, you see many, many individuals with pit bulls. In other parts, the predominant dog breed is the Golden Retriever.
Every time the media sensationalizes a pit bull attack, they play to the mindset of those who want and encourage anti-social dog behavior.
I think you have a good point.
After posting several comments on this thread I decided to go out on the net and learn a little bit about the pit bull subculture. There are numerous breeding sites easily found throughout the internet. Just do a search.
After perusing a dozen or so of these sites, what I gathered were that the popular, desirable "bullies" --as they are called, have been given vitamin supplements in order to make them HUGE! We're talking 90-120 lb dogs! And, of course, they're all given aggressive names and festooned with heavy chain collars, spikes and studded, biker-leather "bibs."
Dogs that look like this:
"Snoop"
And:
"Venom" and "Tyson"
And my favorite:
"Goliath" 142 lbs!
These are but a few examples of the PBs that seem to be popular.
Interesting subculture. And nope, I still don't want them for neighbors (because I'm sure these dogs are valued for their "gentleness").
Everybody brings up the "Little Rascals" dog as an example of a pit bull. It probably is but those aren't the type of PBs that are being raised today. People who want pit bulls seem to want big and mean pit bulls as these are what the many breeding sites seem to concentrate on breeding. I mean, c'mon, if you name your dog "Gotti" or "Corleone" you're not looking for a gentle animal.
Another thread full of sheep estrogen.
I do appreciate the reply.
Be well!

Here he is smiling afterwards.
This is why I can not post on FR anymore. Because I am dead ya know.
Pit bulls have eyes like sharks.
Look at the eyes on that thing.
Like I’ve been saying, they’re like the eyes of a reptile or shark—dead and souless.
And they are the ugliest POS dogs I’ve ever seen, too.
UGLY POS.
Even the puppies have the beady, snake eyes of killers.
I agree.
The scary part is the admirers of such dogs are blind to their appearance as well as their menace.
