My first question: was their door closed? I’d be happy to grab my carry-Kimber and stop a crime in progress... if I could see what was truly going on. But I’m not going to try to break someone’s front door just because I hear yelling inside. That merits a 911 call for me. Let the police deal with the surprises inside. For all I know, it could be a TV, some kids making a home movie, etc... and I’d merely open myself to liability for attempting to be a good neighbor.

It was in a hallway, not in an apartment. That is how 10 people witnessed the attack and did nothing.

If someone is yelling 'help' I would take that is an invitation to force the door and render what ever assistance is possible. So yeah, kicking in the door with .45 drawn would be SOP if it can be clearly heard that someone is in distress and violence is happening.
