Are Clinton and Giuliani Coasting on High Name ID? [Gallup: Thompson 33%; Giuliani 25%; Romney 16%]
Gallup ^ | 8/23/2007 | Lydia Saad

According to Gallup's analysis of the relationship between candidate familiarity and vote choice over the past three polls, Giuliani is the clear favorite among Republicans who are not familiar with all of the other candidates in the field. He leads this group with 38% of the vote, compared with 18% for McCain, 12% for Thompson, and only 6% for Romney. However, among the slightly smaller group of Republicans who are familiar with all four candidates, the leader is Thompson with 33%. Giuliani ranks second with 25%, followed by Romney and then McCain.

This represents a stark contrast to the stability of voter choices on the Democratic side. The implication is that Giuliani is at greater risk than Clinton of losing support as the campaign progresses and his opponents become better known.

Duncan Hunter is not even a blip on the radar screen—whether you and the Duncanista crowd want to admit it, or not. The man hasn’t even run a recognizable campaign.

Early polls are all name ID and only that.

Exactly!! It's incredible how many Republicans are NOT aware of Rudy's positions on social issues. It's not surprising he's in the lead given the amount of 'fact time' he received post 9/11.

As most polls have also shown, as Republicans become MORE aware of Guiliani's liberal bent,,,,

support for him drops (as it should).

We do NOT need a liberal bully to head our Party,,,,OR our country. We certainly do NOT need two political parties,,,BOTH to the 'left-of-center'.

So you ignored all the other TRUE conservatives who are ACTUALLY RUNNING for President and out of the blue said - “we need to get Fred Thompson!”
I highly doubt that! Until Fred Thompson’s name started to FLOAT around the media (wonder how that happened) that he is may run...there was no draft Fred Thompson movement.
Think about...Duncan Hunter ACTUALLY has a conservative record (better than Fred’s too) and is ACTUALLY running for President. HE IS OUR GRASSROOTS CONSERVATIVE but because he isn’t known by the East Coast media he gets no attention!
Why is it that no Midwest or West coast candidates are in the top 3?
Romney - Boston Big Money Guy with a liberal record (E.C. Media covers him); Rudy, Mayor of New York with liberal tendencies, (E.C. media covers him); Thompson - Famous Actor on a tv show broadcast on a major E.C. based television station (E.C. Media covers him).
CBS, NBC, ABC, FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, NY Times, Washington Post...ALL BASED ON THE EAST COAST. They set the news agenda.
Head to Head Hunter wipes the floor with Thompson and the only reason why Hunter doesn’t get the press is he has no east coast connections and that’s why they don’t concentrate on him. He has had some great sound bites from the debates yet they never cover it afterwards.
Sorry boys and girls, but the media has anointed the top candidates, NOT US.

The less time our congressmen spend in D.C. THE BETTER.

During Hunter’s time in congress he has done more for conservative causes than most. Heck, Fred Thompson was known for his layiestness while serving as Sentor.

Most Senators who spend 100% of their time in D.C. are doing nothing but being wine and dined by lobbyists, figuring new ways to spend OUR hard earned money on special interests and losing touch with their constituents.

You go from hypothetical BS to nonsensical BS. FredT was being pushed by grassroots conservative like those found right here on Free Republic. I agree with you about Rooty being pushed by the liberal media. McCain too. Not Romney. As I mentioned to you in my post at #25, Tancredo and Hunter are good conservatives. Just not good candidates. Tancredo is from my home state and the a true Reagan conservative and a good man.

>>>>>Head to Head Hunter wipes the floor with Thompson ...

Stop whining. They're both good conservatives and well respected around FR. You don't see me attacking Cong Hunter. Never have. You Duncanista's should have more respect for legitimate conservatives like FredT.

Hunter seems like a good person and a good candidate, but Thompson's record is many miles better than Hunter's on reining in government spending and returning unConstitutional federal goverment power to the states.

Hunter’s accepting money and not doing the job, which is to be at the VOTES. That’s disgraceful, lazy, and completely dishonest. It’s theft.

And your lazy charge is simply not true.

***

Every profile I’ve read on Thompson contains references, by the typical unnamed coward sources, to him being “lazy”, his Senate career lackluster, and gasp, there’s not a piece of legislation with his name on it! (Well gee, Teddy Kennedy has his name on a bunch of bills - and that’s made the nation a better place, n’est ce pas?)

My experience with Senator Thompson dates to when I was the public affairs chief for GAO, the Government Accountability Office, a legislative branch agency providing oversight of the feds. Thompson was chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, the complementary panel to GAO. It’s kind of a backwater committee, with not the visibility of say, Foreign Affairs, or Armed Services, or Appropriations. But the committee is essential to investigating the mechanics of government - and how those gears can be made to work more efficiently.

So yeah, Thompson was a big show boater - a huge proponent of the Clinger-Cohen Information Technology Management Reform Act of 1996, doncha know; which required that the “government information technology shop be operated exactly as an efficient and profitable business would be operated.” Then there was his support for the President’s Management Agenda, announced in the summer of 2001, “an aggressive strategy for improving the management of the Federal government…focusing on Expanding E-Government: Improved Service Delivery for the American People Using Information Technology and Expanding E-Government: Partnering for a Results-Oriented Government.” Yowzah, man, hot Hot HOT! Front page baby!

...So now I hear the stories about Thompson, which are typical of 1. Opponents who want to drag him down, which is the way it works, and 2. A lazy press corps who but for a few stalwarts, didn’t cover this subject matter when Thompson was preaching at the wind.

Now, I’m too much of a nothing burger to have any say in this race. But Thompson, whatever his faults, is not getting a fair shake. When you’re waxing on about OMB circulars and Clinger-Cohen’s e-billing protocols, you’re not exactly lazy or lackluster. In fact, you’re actually doing what government is supposed to be doing, which is trying to do better.

Norman Ornstein, a congressional scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington think tank, said he saw Thompson as a thoughtful lawmaker able to reach across party lines.

“He worked plenty and he absorbed plenty,” said Ornstein.

In interviews, several of his former Senate aides expressed surprise at suggestions by unnamed critics that their old boss might be lethargic.

“Whoever says this man is lazy never worked for him,” said Bill Outhier, a former aide who recalled the campaign finance staff “working until midnight” because the senator was still in the office.

As Robert Novak reported last week, the rap againt Thomspon is that “he was not a hard worker during his eight years in the Senate.” Yet I’m told by a source who was there that Thompson was a reasonably diligent member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In any case, this rap is unlikely to hurt Thompson with voters outside the beltway.

What will matter is whether Thompson is prepared to campaign diligently for the nomination. If so, he likely will represent a force to be reckoned with.

The rap on Thompson is that he was “lazy” when he was in the Senate. This is precisely the same sort of rap that Leftists made about Ronald Reagan. In fact, this is strength. Because Thompson acts from principle, he does not need to engage in the Machiavellian machinations which pass for “work” in Washington. The reality is that it is absurd to consider Thompson, who has worked during his life in more real jobs than almost any politician in Washington and who today stars in two television programs as well as being the substitute for Paul Harvey and a frequent commentator in conservative periodicals is “lazy” at all. Like Reagan, he probably works harder than anyone in Washington.

I was on board YEARS ago, and mentioned a Fred run on FR in October or November of last year, and was joined by many people who wished the same thing.

Just because YOU are uninformed, doesn’t mean everyone is.

When did Fred Thompson become a candidate ? Must have missed the announcement.

He hasn't announced, but I think it is clear he is a candidate. The reasons he hasn't announced are on about every "Fred Thread" that has been posted since May in response to the mock confusion regarding his status by the nay-sayers. You know, kinda like now.

So you are saying you where on the bandwagon BEFORE all the media fuss that he might run? Sure...

Your options:

1. Call me a liar.

2. Search my Freeper posts.

3. Compare the date of the VT shooting that Fred responded to on his blog in a way that won me over on his profound articulate conservative principles, with the date of “media fuss.”
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1820535/posts?page=75#75
(Granted, I was on board a month then, but that is a damn good example, and there was little “fuss” at the time on April 20.

Maybe you just need to accept that people who can read what Fred writes have a damn good reason to support him.

As long as they can defeat Shrillary and her marxist plans for America, he’s got my full support

If you don't care about nominating the most conservative nominee possible, you're worthless in the battle against liberalism.
