Opponents Attack Giuliani’s New York Record (Thompson and Romney)
The New York Times ^ | August 23, 2007 | Michael Luo

Rudolph W. Giuliani has showcased his record running the city of New York as he has campaigned for the presidency. But his performance as mayor is now being turned against him as two of his opponents have begun challenging him on two of the biggest issues in the Republican primary: gun control and immigration.

This week, Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, started running radio advertisements in Iowa and New Hampshire referring to New York City as a “sanctuary city” in an effort to portray Mr. Giuliani as liberal on immigration, a position that would put him out of step with many Republican voters. And on Tuesday, former Senator Fred D. Thompson, who is not yet officially in the race, threw down the gauntlet with a commentary on his Web site that criticized New York gun laws and mentioned the Giuliani administration’s efforts to sue gun makers.

The criticism of Mr. Giuliani is not surprising given his continued dominance in national polls and the perception among Republicans that he is vulnerable on a host of issues. But it is only now that other candidates have begun engaging him directly.

“I don’t think any of the candidates had really taken shots at Giuliani because maybe they thought his stance on social issues in particular would do the work for them,” said Chuck Laudner, executive director of the Iowa Republican Party. “It’s apparent, not in Iowa but nationally, that that’s not the case. They have to start hammering some of that stuff home.”

Mr. Giuliani’s candidacy has always been considered somewhat unorthodox, given his more moderate views on social issues like abortion, which put him at odds with many in the Republican base.

We knew Rudy was a socialist liberal masquerading as a Republican about 6 years ago. Why is anyone surprised his record is being questioned?

Whoever does the most effective job of trashing the leftwing mayor and removing that menace to conservative values from the race gets big points with me.

This is very painful for the 36% of the republicans that support “Sanctuary Man” . His adultery is appalling along with his cross dressing and gun grabbing. But his coddling of illegal aliens is his political doom. I think he is finished politically. He has now been fully exposed a a phony and a liberals liberal. This is Reagan’s party— Get out “Sanctuary man”!!

I could never vote for a guy like that. I don’t know if proximity to terrorism means you’re “tough on terror,” but he just has a whole mess of problems that I just can’t gulp down and vote for.

For the Willard Wafflers...

Mitt Romney Now: “And I think we ought to cut off some funding, federal funding, to cities that call themselves sanctuary cities, that welcome people into their cities who are illegal and who provide benefits to individuals, other than of course emergency health care and education. But we don't want have sanctuary cities, calling on people to come to this country illegally. That's why we have 12 million illegal people in this country.” (Fox News’ “Fox And Friends,” 8/9/07)

Mitt Romney Then: Despite his recent opposition to sanctuary cities, as Governor, Mitt Romney recommended over $324 million in state aid to Massachusetts sanctuary cities Cambridge, Orleans and Somerville. (Commonwealth Of Massachusetts Fiscal Affairs Division Website, http://www.mass.gov/bb/

Another conversion before our eyes.

New York Times, March 8, 1994----

Democratic lawmakers praised the Mayor's push for gun control. "It would be great if Mayor Giuliani could become the point Republican pushing comprehensive gun control legislation," said Representative Charles E. Schumer, the Brooklyn Democrat who is the leading proponent of handgun control in the House of Representatives.

It looks like a President Giuiani will have lots of bi-partisan support for much of his legislation. Just what we need, a LIBERAL BULLY. /s

“Whoever does the most effective job of trashing the leftwing mayor and removing that menace to conservative values from the race gets big points with me.”

Me too... People seem not to understand the consequences of a Giuliani presidency. He has no qualms about admitting he doesn’t even want conservative support (most famously in the “if you don’t like it, don’t vote for me” speech of recent months) and is placing his bets on pulling the moderate vote in for a win.

A Giuliani presidency would effectively signal the end of conservative influence on the Republican party, as “votes along party lines” would now mean that democrats and republicans were voting the same way.

Exactly.

The Republican Party has been drifting to the 'left' for years now. A liberal like Rudy would accelerate that movement to the left.

If you want to achieve the liberal DREAMWORLD of BOTH political parties to the 'left-of-center',,,,a liberal bully like Giuiani is JUST THE MAN FOR THE JOB!
