PORTLAND - Special security teams were dispatched for a crackdown on travelers at Portland International Airport.

Newschannel 8 learned Tuesday Homeland Security has deployed federal agents and local police known as “VIPR” teams to PDX.

The “Visual Intermodal Protection and Response” teams have been deployed nearly 84 times in the past year.

The agency dispatches the teams around the country, especially during peak travel days and special events -- but officials said there was no specific threat.

They'll be on patrol at the airport for two days starting Wednesday morning.

The Transportation Security Administration met behind closed doors Tuesday and would not comment on the operation.

Security may also involve random vehicle inspections.

There was no word on how it may affect travel times.

Gotta keep those uppity travelers in their place...

Note to self: when booking flights, avoid connections at PDX!

“VIPR” teams

Ya gotta be kiddin' me... More SWAT mentality, this time at TSA, all the while the screeners let crazed imams through while picking on little old ladies of northern European descent.

Perhaps they’re hoping to find these 2 guys who were acting “suspiciously” on the Washington Ferry.

Notice the name. "VIPR" pronounced, no doubt, VIPER.
I guess that's about right. Snakes in the grass eating away at the egg of our liberties and right.

Would you post a report, please?

(And let me know anytime you're flying into SEA *\;-)

“Random vehicle inspections” eh. Hmm, is this legal? What about my fourth ammendment rights? There are public roads that go right up, past and through PDX. What if I politely DECLINE to allow VIPR team member to inspect my vehicle?

Michael Chertoff is perhaps the most incompetent person in the Federal Government today.
He needs to step down and let someone in who can actually make decisions.

They'll politely drag you from your vehicle and politely blow your brains out.

You'll probably end up spread eagled on the ground with your arms handcuffed behind your back and your vehicle ripped apart on the side of the road.

If you're not dead.

LOL, that sounds like something Sergeant Stedenko from Cheech and Chong would come up with.

Is there any relation to this?

“Note to self: when booking flights, avoid connections at PDX!”

Should not be too difficult.
PDX is not exactly a major hub.

True, but it comes up often enough on my corporate “lowest-fare” searches out of SEA.
