There was an article in the Wall St Journal about a resurgence of this traditional practice, but with a twist. In what appears to be an interesting variant of the suttee, some Indian men, dissatisfied with the dowry payments they received, were mysteriously having their wives go up in flames.
Tragic. So tragic. Somehow these clumsy women spilled kerosene all over themselves, and foolishly approached the stove... whereupon they would burst into flames. Say what you will about the superiority of the gas range for cooking beefsteak, these women would have been far better off with a Gold Medallion home and an electric range.

But yes, I do agree that the problem of Dowry is too bad and many innocent HINDU women lose their lives. As I said earlier, India is not perfect and there are a million things it could change. But that problem is NOT related to how foreigners are treated.
Atleast Indians dont ill treat foreigners, which is the issue here.
I think most decent and educated Indians, Chinese, and people hailing from countries which you cant even pronounce, let alone locate on a world map have to face this problem with certain overzealous self declared patriots who just use the typical argument against us “get out of my country if you disagree a single word with us”...
Let me assure you that for each and every illegal immigrant from Mexico, there are several legal immigrants who do nothing but contribute positively to US, much better than a MAJORITY of Americans themselves... Einstein, Razavi, Kroemer, FM Liu, CP Chen included.
BTW, have you ever pondered even for a fraction of a second how democratic societies can encourage assimilation of minorities ? By insulting people and denigrating them racially and culturally ? Constantly rebuking them that their native culture is lousy and since they came to US, they should NOT talk back to any American ?
