Woman mauled by home-invading pit bulls

07:45 PM PDT on Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Animal control officers say the victim was covered in blood after the dogs attacked PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. - In what deputies describe as the worst mauling they've ever seen, two pit bulls entered a Wauna-area home via the pet door and attacked a woman in her bed.

Pierce County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Ed Troyer said a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier also entered the home in the 10600 block of 132nd St. Court NW through the dog door and the pit bulls attacked the terrier named Romeo.

The 59-year-old woman was in bed, in her room. Neighbors say she was sound asleep when the attack happened. She managed to get away, run to her car, lock herself in and call 911. Even after fighting off the dogs, she was in pretty bad shape.

Two pit bulls entered a Pierce County home and attacked a woman in her bed.

"Pretty much from head-to-toe, she was covered in blood," said Pierce County Animal Control officer Brian Bowman.

Troyer said firefighters locked the pit bulls in the house until deputies arrived. Officers had to use pepper spray and fight the dogs to get them into custody.

The woman was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, where she was listed in satisfactory condition. The terrier was taken to an animal hospital, where he died Tuesday afternoon.

The pit bulls were taken to the Pierce County Humane Society, where they will remain until the case is resolved.

The pit bulls also attacked a Jack Russell terrier named Romeo.

Troyer said the owner of the pit bulls has been identified and lives on the same street as the victim. KING 5 went to the home, but nobody answered the door. Neighbors say they have had problems in the past with the two pit bulls running wild.

Information will be given to prosecutors, who will decide what, if any, charges will be filed against the owners. Animal control officers say they will recommend gross misdemeanor charges at the very least.

Ban welfare!

You got that one right.

All the pit lovers on this thread keep saying that with the *right* home, the *right owner, the *right* training, the *right* yada, yada, yada. If they require so much to be good dogs, there's something wrong with them; they're not gentle, they don't have a good disposition. The pit owners themselves are condemning the dogs by stating how much it takes to control them.

I think that it is within the bounds of the law to shoot aggressive dogs on your own property.

Me too.

Take a poll of conservatives on this subject and you will find you’re dead wrong.

Conservatives do not believe in a nanny state.

There was a time when the words "accountability" and "responsibilty," did not have to be replaced by laws.

I think fat, ugly people should be thrown in jail because the sight of them causes me nightmares, and I'm now on suicide watch.

How many flippin' laws do you want in this country?

All dogs need the *right* home, the *right owner, the *right* training, the *right* yada, yada, yada

The larger a dog is the greater the potential danger (damage it can do)
and the more acute the need for the right yada, yada, yada.
In the vast majority of cases they do have good dispositions
but still require knowledgeable owners to nurture that disposition and to set boundaries on behavior.
The principles of good/responsible dog ownership apply to all dogs regardless of breed/type.
(Training, Socialization and Control)
There are somethings that are breed specific that have to do with control.
Some dogs can jump over higher fences and that has to be considered.
Some dogs are larger and should not be walked by a child incapable of restraining the dog on leash.
and so on...

Mostly right, but the pits are bred to be dog aggressive not human aggressive. This is why there are so many owners who think they have the most lovable dog going. The problem is that when you have a powerful dog like a pit that hasn’t been properly socialized and that is psychologically damaged by low IQ or psychotic owners, you have a tragedy just waiting to happen. I wouldn’t want to own one...BTW, free will in a dog? a pit? Are they crazy?

I have yet to see most other breeds react to bad upbringing like pits do. I’ve seen other breeds badly abused and yes, they behave badly and may threaten and bite, but they don’t turn into the rip your throat out monsters as easily as pits do.

I’ll tell you what.... Whenever you find articles about non-pit breeds going berserk like this and doing the kind of damage pits do; post it for all to see.

NO DOGGY PROFILING!

Perfect. And since you're on the subject of 'vicious', small dogs, here's my anecdote.

I saw a little dog running down a very busy street. Just knowing that it was about to be hit by a car, I jumped out, and "rescued" it. Unfortunately, I was not aware of the never grab-a-dog-by-the-back-of-the-neck- rule. He promptly turned and sunk his little fangs into my hand. I was shocked! LOL. But what that incident did show me was just how nasty animal bites are. They are very painful and do not heal like ordinary cuts, and mine were small. My full sympathies go out to those victims of serious dog bites.

I'm sure I could raise tigers to be loving and kind and gentle with kids...

I'm sure you couldn't...

but that would mean the neigbor kid with the bad attitude would have the right to raise tigers too.

Very disappointing. Having read some other posts by you I figured you for an intelligent person. (near extinction at FR)

Good point about the large dog/small child thing. The exception that proves your rule:

One of my smooth collies weighs 130 lbs. He’s fixed, and very tractable, which makes me comfortable allowing my friend’s 60 lb girl walk him on a leash.

It’s the cutest thing, this tiny little girl completely in control of this big galoot of a dog. The leash is slack, and his tail never stops wagging the whole time they’re out.

All my dogs will allow any member of the household to take food out of their mouths, remove the food dish while eating, take bones, toys or even treats away. This is because they know that they are DOGS, and people are the ones in charge. The same rule was in effect when our pit cross and the Rottweiler lived here: the alphas (people) of the house can and may take what they want, when they want.

That said, I’d not want to be an unwelcome visitor here. The boys are pretty good at letting us know when something isn’t right.

Then there are the fools out there who excuse and enable this type of behavior...

this IS wa wa washington after all. i think the peta types are the reason. pepper spray will do zilch to a determined pitbull. they would have had to use some kind of tranquilizer dart.

The exception that proves your rule:

"The process of moving from the specific to the general is both necessary and perilous...
How do we know when we’ve made the right generalization?"

The above is quoted from an article I came across yesterday.
It deserves its own thread but it's rather long...

What pit bulls can teach us about profiling.

What did LMP say anyway. Some goo about “oh, all the pit bulls I know are just little angels, I don’t know what the fuss is all about”? Infuriating and ignorant yes, but deleteworthy? LMP did not get banned.

Oh and why is a “cold hand” a “plastic surgery” problem?

LMP had been arguing her points in a polite manner until
a poster who momentarily forgot what being a gentleman entails
replied to a LMP post containing photos of her children with a derogatory comment.
LMP's maternal claws came out (my conjecture) and she responded with some unlady-like language.
She was temporarily banned then reinstated, whether she returns or not remains to be seen.

Oh and why is a “cold hand” a “plastic surgery” problem?

Everything distal to the elbow falls into the scope of practice for plastic surgery. A cold hand means that there isn't adequate circulation and without adequate circulation there is a danger of loss of part or all of the hand. Getting circulation restored is an emergency.

She didn't say anthing to me ban worthy. I thought we were being relatively polite. I have to say that cutsie pictures of dogs are fairly disgusting which is why I posted some not so cutsie pictures of dog bite victims. Sense of proportion is needed. Frankly, I find peoples' attitudes toward their dogs to be irresponsible at best. There are a few who are responsible, but except on this forum, I haven't run across them. My own idiot cousin had a large nasty dog that bit a jogger. When he complained she told him he shouldn't have been jogging on the same side of the street with her dog. I'da shot the dog (and maybe her too. :-)

500,000 - 800,000 dog bites requiring ER treatment is just too many. I wonder if the doctors who are so hot to ban guns give a crap about dog bite or malpractice (145,000 killed anually)
