Hurricane Dean came ashore with 165 mph sustained winds and estimated 200 mph gusts near sparsely populated Majahual, a tourist cruise port in Costa Maya, Mexico. Dean's barometric pressure was the third lowest on record for an Atlantic Basin storm at landfall. It was the most powerful Atlantic storm at landfall since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The storm weakened substantially as it crossed the Yucatan Peninsula, and entered into the waters of Campeche Bay as a Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane Dean's path is expected to cross a good portion of Mexico's oil fields.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon stated no fatalities have been reported, while the storm was still traversing the Yucatan Peninsula, and clean up efforts had yet to begin. Meanwhile, state and local officials announced they will conduct a damage assessment this evening, once conditions are deemed safe.
Jamaica has postponed Aug. 27 general elections until hurricane damage can be assessed. Hurricane Dean is blamed for at least 11 deaths in Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti and the island of Dominica.
In Florida, the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour landed safely, after officials ordered the crew to end its mission one day early because of weather concerns at mission control in Houston, Texas.

I like the part of the comedian Ron White’s hurricane sketch.
“It’s not *that* the wind is blowing, it’s *WHAT* the wind is blowing.” Then he goes on to explain it could be blowing a VW bus right into you. LOL!
So all you’d have to do is aim a jet just right?
steveegg wrote: Bust? You call the third-most-intense hurricane at landfall a bust? I’m thankful that Dean came ashore in pretty much jungle where almost the only thing to take down were trees.
Steve, I am also glad that the human toll was not as high as could have been. The Weather Channel (Canadian owned) continually broadcast this storm as historical and life-thretening. (heck, driving down the 405 freeway at 5pm is life-threatening.)
In the context of media hype and build-up, this storm was a bust. Human hardships and tragedy sells, trees falling in a forest do not. The news channels did their best to ramp up our sordid expectations. You can also be assured that the global warmers were all locked and loaded and ready to pounce on this hurricane as this year’s Katrina.
While the statistical readings from this hurricane will undoubtedly excite those with a vested curiosity in such numbers, for the general populace, this storm has been a bust. People who were drawn in expecting much more will walk away shaking their heads, much like after the Pirates3 movie, and muttering to themselves, “that was it?”
At 165 mph, it’s also that the wind is blowing, because it’s likely to be blowing you into that wall behind you.
Can’t make out the track - doesn’t look due W to me. Then another WV loop looks like the old eye fell apart and a new one formed much S of the old one while we weren’t looking.
Hey, it’s raining monkeys at my house! Hallelujah, it’s raining monkeys!
Honest, the ULL *stole* some Dean rain and sent a tiny bit here. The sun is shining and it’s pouring great big splashy drops of well, looks like great green globs of greasy grimy gopher guts, little dirty birdie feet and mutilated monkey meat ... to me.
RGV is supposed to get some, too.
At least there should be a rainbow!
Hooray monkeys.
so any good comments on the stupid headline article?
With an undiscernable eye, anything appears possible.
Which stupid headline article? Most of the presstitutes offer nothing but.
Just be thankful (like I am) that hurricanes won’t affect you. If you are, then I won’t mock “minor” earthquakes.
the one I posted last night that you put on your blog
The headline's still there in the original.
Anyone ever figure out a purpose for hurricanes? I read somewhere that they cool the oceans.
Had to repost this little gem.
For your viewing pleasure, stupid headline award:

Sounds like it's as good a reason as any.
They give people in California, Michigan and Maryland something else to scoff and complain about.
Looks like another “do I go left or right?”storm
That low pressure system doesn’t exist anymore. It dissipated.
