I was also sympathetic to Russia in those days, not because I admired Stalin or the Soviet system but because it seemed to be the only country willing to stand up to Hitler.

The Party faithful turned on the dime: "Oceania is at war with Eastasia. Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia."

Lots of pinko fuzzies and fellow-travelers considered this one too big to swallow, and bailed accordingly.

While the Pact was in force, the Communist Party in the US was active in trying to keep the US isolationist and out of the war. It was only AFTER Hitler attacked Russia in the summer of 1941 that the Reds began clamoring for the US to enter the war
