When Dr. Steven Curley of M.D. Anderson states publicly that he is cautiously optimistic, it is time to sit up and take notice.

Who needs investors when you have Republican earmarks to play with? Note the article's date.

Thank you. I think I’m in the clear now. None of my doctors, including the head of radiation, had ever seen my situation, Apparently there have been only 5 cases in soCal.

Thank you. I plan to print this out and take it to my oncologist.

I e-mailed Dr. Curley, and they don't expect clinical trials to start for 3-4 years. Are you sure about them starting earlier, as I would like to volunteer?

Thanks for the prayers. We were told yesterday that she does have cancer - here we go again...

Very interesting. I’d go for it for a 50 percent chance, unless I was 80-90 something and had a bunch of other problems, then I’d be ready to go “home.”

Yes, I know. I don’t know about you, but I don’t know enough about the different mixtures to tell anyone which one they need. I leave it to the specialists. It still sucks.

You got that right. That’s why I took it seriously. Why be pessimistic, when one can be optimistic? Some of the Freepers on here seem to be cynically pessimistic, in fact.

Hey - thanks for that link to the article in the Gazette. It had a lot of detail that wasn’t in mine.

I guess I’ll have to remain cautiously optimistic, as is Dr. Curley at MD Anderson. Also, I like Santorum, so glad to see his name come up.

Hey, if he can do it I’m all for hailing Erie as the town of the greatest scienfitic discovery of my time.

Anyone could come up with a treatment that will work "if you can just get it to the cancer cells and not to the normal cells". If I could just get fire to cancer cells and not to normal cells, I'd have a cure for cancer! But that's hard.

Thats the billion dollar question. I heard a couple years ago about a similiar idea, involving ultrasound I think. Or some other wave to trigger them the nano particles to heat up, killing the cell.

They were trying to engineer shapes onto the particle that would interact with the cells dendrites. They said cancer cells have their own unique dendrites. Although I would guess each type of cancer has different types of dendrites. However engineering such shapes is an nanotech challenge.. then figuring out how to manufacture in enough quantity to wipe out all the cells you want to kill.

Luckily our ability to engineer in the nano dimensions is increasing at a great pace.

Please ping me if you hear anymore developments by these scientists. I will add info if I see developments down a similiar line of research.

One thing that is heartening to me about your posts and others in this thread is the optimism, that yes we can find cures for cancers.. and that it would be a good thing.

Its sad and pathetic but amongst some liberals I talk to online or in person.. they would immediately question whether this would be a good thing for the world. A world in their mind struggling with overpopulation already. Their next complaint before ever being positive would be that if it came only rich people or at most people in rich countries would get the treatment.. while the poor would go without.

Only God knows - it would be cool though. How about just having it happen in the U.S.? I’d like that.

Please email me so I remember your FR name - I’m not as savvy as others on here - and I promise to ping you. I have a friend involved in research (not this specific area, but another area of cancer research) so I do try to keep up. Besides, now that my mom has cancer again, it’s a personal thing too.

"venture capitalists, big pharmaceuticals that might want to buy this to tempt me and stop the research, not going to happen. There is no amount of money that can buy me off."

He's watched too many movies.

MD Anderson is one of the most respected cancer centers in the world. 79 thousand cancer patients were treated at the huge campus in Houston last year.

79 thousand patients in a year? Wow!

You nailed it in #10. Inept reporting.

If this inventor’s stuff proves out, the investors in these companies will lose everything and that’s money in the high millions.

And if they "bought out" this amazing cancer cure, they'd make money in the high billions. Which is the statement makes no sense, and sets of my BS detector.
