Well, that would have to be looked into. Any legitimate church that WANTS to provide sanctuary, should be allowed to. Obviously, once the suspect leaves the building, it’s all over. They can’t stay in there forever. Also, once the church decides NO MORE, then it’s also over.
Maybe there should be a team of religious people that go in and interview the suspect and the church officials to determine if it is a legitimate sanctary situation. It wouldn’t be hard to make up a checklist of minimum requiremets.

You’d also have to decide what does and what doesn’t count as a church and I don’t really want the government doing that.
I’ve never understood this church sanctuary business. I understand that the 1st Amendment guarantees free practice of religion.......but it does NOT guarantee an exemption for fugitives from justice under the guise of practicing religion.
They looked into that for hundreds of years, then about 300 years ago it was decided that the Church should not control the state. Giving the churches the right to interfere with enforcing the civil laws would mean just that.
