The standing joke is if you run into trouble ... the LAST thing you want to do is contact the Mexican police. Mexico is hopelessly corrupt - like Aruba ... .only the violence and kidnappings are in the open.

Was in Matamoros a year or so ago with the Mrs, our son, DIL and grandson. Gotta say, we had a good day, bought lots of reasonably priced stuff (after serious negotiations), ate and drank well, and all in all, had a great time!

But, honestly, I was exhausted at the end of the day, constantly looking over my shoulder/listening to native conversations and being on alert for anything suspicious took some of the fun out of it.

I'd go back, almost certainly will, but for anyone thinking about a Mexico visit, for heavens sake use your head! Avoid known trouble areas (Nuevo Laredo, Tijuana, etc.) and stay alert, and enjoy yourself!
