Uh, you might want to reverse those percentages there...Rudy is more liberal than some Democrats.
I haven't looked at it systematically and I should. So: I'm going to http://www.ontheissues.org/Rudy_Giuliani.htm (politically neutral, as far as I know) to check out his stands on various issues. I'll be back in a bit!
...Okay, I'm back. Here are the results (note: I'm a fiscal and foreign policy conservative, but not a social conservative).
Abortion: Pro-abortion (liberal, and I agree with him)
Budget & Economy: Not a lot, but what's there speaks of fiscal accountability (conservative, and I agree with him)
Civil Rights: Pro-gay rights, anti-school prayer, no funding for obscene art, contradictory on affirmative rights: (liberal overall, and I agree with all but affirmative action, being totally against it)
Crime: Tough on crime, pro-death penalty (conservative, and I agree with him)
Drugs: From what little is here, appears to support the war on drugs (conservative, and I disagree with him)
Education: Pro-vouchers, anti-union (conservative, and I agree with him)
Energy: Accepts global warming, against Kyoto, no new energy tax, pro-nuclear power, pro-energy independence (a bit mixed, but more conservative than liberal, and I largely agree)
Families & Children: Says children should have permenant homes and that jobs are good for families. How's that for going out on a limb? No points either way.
Foreign Policy: Pro-War on Terror, anti-Arafat (conservative, and I agree)
Free Trade: Anti-protectionist (conservative, and I agree)
Government Reform: Pro-pardon for Libby, anti-line item veto, supports campaign finance reform (mixed, but leaning liberal, and I disagree)
Gun Control: Almost nothing on this website, but I've seen enough to count him as Liberal, although not as bad as some (and I disagree)
Health Care: No socialized medicine, more individual choice (conservative, and I agree)
Homeland Security: Pro-Patriot Act, don't accomodate terrorists (conservative, and I agree)
Immigration: Wants tamper-proof IDs, throw out illegals who aren't in the database. Pro-Senate Immigration Plan (mixed, and I partially disagree)
Jobs: Jobs are good (a platitude, no points either way)
Principles & Values: Motto of Live Free or Die, Optimistic, supports Republicans for election, supports President Bush in War on Terror, a bunch of platitudes and liberal social values (conservative overall, and I agree)
Taxes: Reduce taxes, eliminate death tax (conservative, and I agree)
Technology: Not enough data
War & Peace: Pro-War on Terror, keeps nukes as an option for attacking Iran (conservative, and I agree)
Welfare & Poverty: Move people off Welfare, people on Welfare should work, take homeless off streets (conservative, and I agree)
Okay, that adds up to 18 issues that have enough data to assaign a value. Of those, he gets 13 conservative, 1 mixed, and 4 liberal. If we split points on the mixed issue, that gives Rudy a score of 75% conservative and 25% liberal. Not quite 80%, but darned close.
But wait, there's more...how much does he agree with me?
Some issues are more important to me than others. I would count Budget & Economy, Energy, Foreign Policy, Gun Control, Homeland Security, Taxes, and War & Peace as my primary issues, so I''ll assign double value to each of those. I couldn't care less about Abortion, so that doesn't count. That gives him a score of 85%.
As per President Reagan's definition, that makes him an ally. Your milage may vary.
