Immigration debate gets angrier -- Groups loudly press for state, local crackdowns.

WASHINGTON -- Seven weeks after the collapse of legislation in Congress, the outcry against illegal immigration is louder than ever, manifested by proposed clampdowns at the state and local levels and an uproar over the arrest of an undocumented immigrant in the execution-style slayings of three New Jersey college students.

Scores of organizations, ranging from mainstream to fringe groups, are marshaling forces in what former House Speaker Newt Gingrich calls "a war here at home" against illegal immigration, which he says is as important as America's conflicts being fought overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While most of the groups register legitimate, widespread concerns about the impact of illegal immigration on jobs, social services and national security, the intense rhetoric is generating fears of an emerging dark side, reflected in what appears to be growing discrimination against Latinos and a surge of xenophobia unseen since the last big wave of immigration in the early 20th century.

"I don't think there's been a time like this in our lifetime," said Doris Meissner, a senior fellow with the Migration Policy Institute and former commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. "Even though immigration is always unsettling and somewhat controversial, we haven't had this kind of intensity and widespread, deep-seated anger for almost 100 years."

The Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, said the number of "nativist extremist" organizations advocating against illegal immigration has grown from virtually zero just over five years ago to 144, including nine classified as hate groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan supremacists.

Eighty-three percent of immigrants from Mexico and 79 percent of immigrants from Central America believe there is growing discrimination against Latin American immigrants in the United States, according to a poll conducted by Miami-based Bendixen & Associates.

I don’t think the SWAT teams in my County would give them a chance to get started rioting. That would probably be a fatal mistake for them.

The SPLC hated my second novel, a fact I point to with some pride.

Books on the Right: A Nativist's Paranoid Vision

I agree.....nor in my County. But you and I live in “law and order” areas. I was speaking of imminent riots in Los Angeles, San Francisco, NYC, etc.

Governor Schwarzenegger must inform Villaraigosa that similar actions on his part will result it a state takeover of the City of Los Angeles.

hahahahaha
Schwarzebeggar would be right down there pandering with Villaraigosa and talking about consequences that American citizens will face.
He is a traitor also, otherwise he would have tried to fix California’s problem by now. Instead he wants to give the illegals more freebies and a sanctuary state.

It's the chorus line from "America" that I like

"I want to leeve een Amedica".

I remember it well from my high school years. Always thought it funny.

NOBODY can be in this much denial, or this obtuse

Unfortunately, he is.

Even as a major portion of this country was fighting to defeat his amnesty scheme he insisted on making it come true.

"See you at the bill-signing", he said.

What an idiot.

With respect, CofC, no he isn't. President Bush, the elite ruling class which is his true constituency, and their second-tier nomenklatura in business, academia, finance, media, etc. all know exactly what they're doing, and they are fully cognizant that the vast majority of the American people would oppose them if they were open and honest about their agenda.

The sad reality is that it is those of us who keep agonizing, whining and endlessly asking "why doesn't the President" et al. "understand?", "don't they get it?", and so forth and so forth who are the ones in denial.

The PTBs know exactly what they're doing, they understand perfectly what the American people really want, and they know that the longer they can feign confusion and misunderstanding and keep the benefit of the doubt in the minds of the people, the better their chances of succeeding in their objectives.

Sorry, but I just don’t believe he’s that smart. He’s not. He’s a simpleton being used by corporate America which makes him a useful idiot at best but an idiot just the same.

I was waiting for this to show up here. It was in my morning rag. The spin is predictable, and annoying.

It's the blatant illegality, moron. And the fact that they think they have a right to what does not belong to them and that they have not earned. It is as offensive as if the government allowed them to just walk right in our homes and take what they want. It's the same thing.

The reason we have restrictions on the number of immigrants who can enter the country legally during a given time period is that our infrastructure cannot absorb more.

"The MSM, in my opinion does a very poor job reporting on immigration and illegals and all the related issues. They consistently fail to make the distinction between legal immigration and illegal immigration."

Is there truly anything that they are not poor at reporting? They form an opinion (usually an uneducated one), take a position and that is what they present, and if it doesn't line up with the truth, oh well. Truth is relative anyway, right? < /sarcasm >

"I think Americans are getting tired at all the crime and death caused by illegal aliens."

I know that's true in our area. They are also overly represented in cases of child sexual abuse. But we "NEED" them, right?

What you say is true. I’ll never forget the photo of him holding hands with that faggot Arab, being led like a puppy at a conference of ME dictators/oil magnates. I thought then that this man is no longer MY leader, that’s a fact, I think I’ll support a real man, not a sell-out to the ME, illegal immigration and pandering to our enemy, both foreign and domestic.
