The reason I posted this migration news is because I can't find the news story from KATU.

The farm owners say they have a bountiful year of pears and apples but not enough help due to the immigrants scared to work. Well if they don't have their work permits I would assume they are illegal. On farmer being interviewed claim only 1 American other than hispanic decent has applied for a job in the last 5 years. She also said allowing the pears to rot due to not having pickers is I quote "Murdering the Pears" I had to look at the closed caption to verify.

Now is there not some Americans who could use this work?

Change child labor laws. 12 to 16 year olds could do all the fruit havesting, did back in the 60’s and early 70’s. It’d be good for all the poor attitudes so many young have today, so would the draft!

"I was thinking of those on the govt. welfare program or chronically unemployed."

That probably wouldn't be good for their self-esteem and the ACLU would sue.

That too, I remember picking beans, strawberries, and cherries when I was a teenager. Made good money at it, had too, parents never gave me much allowance. Different world then, probably get arrested now for treating teenagers that way.

Employer requests for H-2A farm workers are listed on the Washington Work Source web site: www.wa.gov/esd/farmworkers/h2a_jobs.htm The apple picking jobs specify that apples are picked into bins that are 4'x4'x3' and hold about 25 bushels, that piece rates are $13 (Red Delicious) to $15 a bin (Golden Delicious and Fuji) and that workers are expected to pick at least 1.3 to 1.4 bins an hour, that is, fast enough to earn the $9.77 AEWR.

That translates to about $.50 a bushel. No wonder no one wants those jobs. Heck, even the illegals are staying away from that pittance.

Thirty-six cubic feet of apples per bin. I would guess that holds about 700 apples. That means they are getting abou two cents per apple picked.

“On farmer being interviewed claim only 1 American other than hispanic decent has applied for a job in the last 5 years. “

Americans would not be welcome when 99% of the workers are illegal, and don’t speak english. More BS.

Illegals are taking all our construction jobs, as it pays 10
dollars an hour, cash!

When I was younger and going to college I worked at a potato shed here. During certain months of the year we processed onions. Was an excellent job since it allowed me to work part of the year and save enough money to get by the rest of the year. Worked long hours but made excellent money. Was all caucasians, mostly middle aged men supporting families. Only reason I got the job was my father was a foreman there.
Slowly but surely the hispanics took over the onion part of the year. Believe me it was obvious that us white girls were not welcome, so eventually we went away. In a couple of years the same thing happened to the potato part of the year and the middle aged white men went away.
We still have potato sheds here but you can’t find a caucasian out there unless it is the owner. It was a very good job for anyone who was willing to work long hard hours and make excellent money.
Another one of those jobs Americans won’t do.

When I was in high school and college, I worked as a roofer. It was hard work, but great pay! I made 7.00 an
hour in 1971-72. 230.00 per week. Equal to about 650.00 per week now. But illegals are taking all the roofing jobs now, and make about 8 to 10 dollars an hour (in 2007)Maybe 325.00 per week.....not much more than I was paid in 1972 dollars.

1) Illegals are stealing American jobs

2) Illegals are destroying working class America by deeply
depressing wages.

Same here went to work after school at 15yrs old.

I had a hard time getting bus fare or the $1 to see a doc when sick so was more than happy to work as a kid.

LOL Now a dayz if a teen came home with a sunburn from picking the State could charge parents with neglect.

What a world.

Seems like this Administration is waging war on the middle class, just to fortify the bottom line for wealthy employers.

I didn’t know a pear could be murdered.

Farmer Jane used a really poor choice of words, perhaps she was trying to attract the attention of the PNW bleeding hearts.
