Karl Rove dreamed of creating a "permanent Republican majority." But as President Bush's longtime adviser exits the Washington scene, the political landscape he helped chart is already shifting beneath his feet: The era of conservative values -- a tight-fisted approach toward government aid to the poor, traditional positions on social issues and a belief in a muscular foreign policy -- that emerged in the 1990s is coming to a close.

Note that the authors do not compare the prevailing sentiments today with those of ten, twenty, or thirty years ago--neutral numbers that would give some reasonable perspective--but with numbers from 2002, 2003, or even 1994 (the high-water mark of American conservatism--so far, anyway) in order to make a point. Anyone with even a rudimentary knowledge of statistics knows that this is not the proper way to examine suspected trends.
As for the comment that only "49 percent [of Americans] think that military strength is the best way to ensure peace," it is doubtful that the entire remainder of 51 percent think otherwise. There are almost certainly enough people in the "Don't Know" category to ensure that the 49 percent still represents a plurality of Americans on this issue--just don't expect that the authors of this highly tendentious piece will point that out.
Could someone show me where jorge hasn't been spending like there was no tomorrow for years. Are better yet show me a spending bill he vetoed.
The only thing that is permanent is “We the people”....as long as we enforce that idea. But....I guess some of our Congressmen/women could be considered permanent also. Like Kennedy. We need term limits to get these people out of office.
We conservatives are the living death...
As long as the Liberal progressives are promising everything to the do nothings with no strings attached just a vote for their favorite compassionate candidate, WE THE PEOPLE, HAVE TO WAKE UP, AND THROW THESE BUMS OUT OF OFFICE! Keep your eyes and ears open, when we sleep the rats are at play!
Permanent Republican Majority?
could have happened except too many republicans (holier than thou) sat out the last election and gave the lib/dems both houses of congress!!!!
in the 2008 election...although some might not be in accord with Rudy/Mitt/Fred, etc....standing on principle and not voting will let the the bee-atch...the piaps waltz into the white house!!!!!
I cannot disagree with the observation that George Bush has been a big-government conservative (if that is not a hopeless oxymoron)--in large measure, I suspect, to try to increase the GOP's client groups. (Of course, turning the GOP into a sort of Democrat-lite party is not likely to be a winning strategy, since those who prefer the policy of redistributionism will always fare better with the Democrats.)
And if you’re right Mr. Kohut and Mr. Doherty—what will you have then? Will you have a 50% (or higher) tax rate, a more confused judiciary, more criminals around the block waiting for you, a mess of a society as we bend for every element? Yes, masters in the media, you will, and you won’t like it very much.
Only after such desturction will you come to realize something different about politics but it will be too late. Once its in, its almost impossible to get out. You’ll be caught with the rest of us in a new kind of quagmire—within the country—the once free United States—all because you didn’t think during the years you wrote tripe like this.
Dummies.
Ignorance on free reign—our media. Stupidity on assignment—our media.
From a liberal's standpoint, what could possibly be more joyous?
The coronation of Empress Hillary I of the United Socialist States of America?
You bring up a good point.....however, our politicians are the ones that put the spending bills in front of the President. The President may not have vetoed the bills, but it was Congress that wanted to spend the money. We need to change Congress so these bills don’t get to the Presidents desk.
Have you ever seen any studies that present any evidence this actually happened? As opposed to us losing the swing vote because of Iraq and corruption? Of course you dont.
Have the authors seen the federal budget in the last ? yrs. It shows federal spending on “social programs” is 5X that of nat’l defense.
They pray for a permanent majority ~ and ultimately they'll be sending people to the death camps.
Anything a "postie" says should be heavily discounted if you value your life and your children's future.
