What does the Dept.of Treas. really do anymore?

They print currency (the Mint produces coins) and collect and manage/mismanage the tax revenues.

The Social Security system was originally set up as a trust, but it didn't take the politicians long to get their hooks into it.

And yes, sphinx, it was a Ponzi scheme, based on projections that the population would increase.

Things change.

No, Social Security was never a trust fund. It was pay-as-you-go from the beginning. FDR labelled it a “trust fund” as a means of selling it to an American public that hadn’t yet been habituated to the dole, but that didn’t make it so.
