Mitt Romney Wins Illinois Straw Poll - Thursday, August 16, 2007

SPRINGFIELD, IL –Illinois State Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna announced today that Mitt Romney won the Illinois Straw Poll on Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair.

“Congratulations to Mitt Romney, whose strong showing today indicates he has begun to put together a strong statewide organization” said McKenna. “There’s no question that Illinois’ demographics closely match those of the United States and this could be an indication as to whom Illinois voters are leaning toward this coming February.”

The Illinois Republican Party sponsored the straw poll during its Republican Day festivities at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. Requirements to participate were: having participated in one of the previously held Republican Presidential Debates; or having polled above 5% in a national, independent poll.

“As I watched hundreds of people literally standing in the rain to vote in our straw poll, it drove home that the Illinois Republican Party is strongly united,” said McKenna. “This was a phenomenal opportunity for the grassroots leaders of the Party to hear from the presidential campaigns.”

The Illinois Republican Presidential Straw Poll was conducted on electronic voting machines and ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Final Results:

1. Mitt Romney – 40.35% 2. Fred Thompson – 19.96% 3. Ron Paul – 18.87% 4. Rudy Giuliani – 11.61% 5. John McCain – 4.12% 6. Mike Huckabee – 3.04% 7. Sam Brownback – 1.08% 8. Duncan Hunter - .65% 9. Tom Tancredo - .33%

Too bad Mitt had to spend 6 MONTHS there and OUT SPEND ever candidate there to run up a puny %. At the rate Mitt’s going he won’t have any money left when it’s time for people to look seriously at who they will vote for. Mitt won’t be able to buy the educated electorate with his RHINO record.

I hadn’t even heard of this straw poll. He doesn’t have to pay me for my vote.

RINO Rudy finished behind Ron Paul? It looks like those paying attention at this point aren’t all that thrilled with Giuliani’s candidacy.

At the rate Mitt’s going he won’t have any money left when it’s time for people to look seriously at who they will vote for.

Two things:

1) Mitt has a couple hundred million dollars at least, of his own money, my bet is that he would spend most of it to get the Presidency, if he thought only money were standing between him and it, and

2) If he gets anywhere near being able to get the nomination, his supporters will make sure he doesn't have to spend very much of his own money. If he gets the nomination, he won't have to spend another dime of his money.

I'm not a Mittbot, but that's the way I see it.

Over $8 million (almost 9) in debt too. Guess fiscal conservatism is off that table.

Sorry everyone, this is pretty meaningless. Anyone could vote in this and still only 922 votes were cast. Here is the breakdown:

Finishing behind Romney in the nine-man field were:

Romney’s - 373 votes
Fred Thompson - 184 votes
Ron Paul - 174 votes
Rudy Giuliani - 107 votes
Sen. John McCain - 38 votes
Mike Huckabee - 28 votes
Sam Brownback - 10 votes
Duncan Hunter - 6 votes
Tom Tancredo - 2 votes

My assumption is that Democrats probably voted for Ron Paul

“RINO Rudy finished behind Ron Paul?”

The Iowa straw poll is the most meaningless exercise in politics, so if the Paulistinians want to get all hot and bothered over this latest bit of Paul-porn, have at it. Nationally, he still barely pulls two percent of the vote.

But hey, he’s a GIANT on the Internet. Yay, netroots.

Interesting that Giuliani did so poorly. I know it’s just a straw poll of particularly energized republicans...but still, I thought he was supposed to do well in blue states? Or is the contention that even blue state pubbies don’t like him, but he’ll make it up with donk votes?
