Fred Has Waited Too Long
Real Clear Politics ^ | August 16, 2007 | Reid Wilson

Posted on 08/16/2007 9:30:03 AM PDT by Plutarch

Fred Thompson's window of opportunity could hardly have been wider. His opponents were fatally flawed in the eyes of the socially conservative Republican base; he's well-known, can raise money, and speaks language that both Republicans and independents leaning right can embrace. Even thinking of entering the race put him above double digits in polls.

But, thanks to a number of missteps and opportunities his pseudo-campaign has failed to capitalize on, Thompson's window is now closed...

The Law & Order star, running a "testing the waters" committee, raised approximately $3.46 million in June after launching June 4th. The campaign's goal was $5 million raised in the same period. Missed expectations are not enough to doom a campaign, but Thompson's media team did little to dampen expectations when they released the report on the last day of July, even though they had to know for weeks that the numbers were lower than expected....

...Fred Thompson had his chance to make a splashy entrance into the race. In fact, he has had many chances to do something to impress political watchers and his fans on the right. Time and again, though, he has missed those opportunities. Instead of managing expectations and raising impressive sums, his campaign reported disappointingly low numbers. Instead of hiring a staff and sticking with it, his campaign has already been beset by turnover. Instead of serving as the conservatives' best hope, they are forced to make excuses as to why his positions are acceptable to them.

Every day he remains out of the race is another day of organizing and winning support lost. At some point, time simply runs out. Thompson has simply waited too long to take advantage of the good will, good fortune and good position that awaited him once he entered the race.

The writer needs to be reminded that JFK entered the race in November.

June or July would of been nice but Fred had reasons, August is a very slow news month, Little that happens gets much notice in August. September, however will be another prime time. Maybe just in time for the YouTube debate.

The truth is that we’ve never started an election like this...almost two years prior to the election Every rule in the book has been tossed out and at this point...I’d even say a third-party candidate (use Al Gore for example)...could whip up a dozen states, win Oregon and California electoral votes..and probably earn enough enough to toss out the electoral college totally.

As I understand it...NBC can no longer run any episodes with him in them after he becomes “official”, but cable/satellite services are not subject to these rules. I do believe he was more worried about the royalties for others than for himself.

Dear lord. After pondering your brilliant hypothesis I was struck by a bolt of lightening realization myself. Look at the facts:

The first letter in Rove's first name is K

The first letter in Thompson's first name is: F

The first letter in the word campaign is: C

K...F...C.

OMG!!! Big Chicken is part of the whole ploy! Aaaaaack!!

I think the author of this drivel looked out the window & it closed on his head. Fred sure has them on the run. For someone who doesn’t have a chance they sure talk about him a lot.

This guy could write a novel about the turning of a page in a book and think that he had written the last word on the subject. Good Grief!

wonder about the motives of RCP

The site is run by a conservative. He does a roundup of important opinion pieces that gathers many points of view, but emphasizes conservative views. The factual reporting, i.e. poll numbers, etc., is very straightforward. It's a good site to check out during the election cycle.

This early start is just ridiculous. It’s like beginning the Christmas season in February. A lot of people are already sick of hearing about them.

I absolutely agree about the potential to throw the EC out of whack.

You can’t have a winning candidate who doesn’t have the conviction to run. That’s what all this indecision says to me.

I don't know enough about the specifics of Fred's positions to say whether or not I like his brand of conservativism. However, what you see as "indecision," combined with Fred's NOT participating in the sham "debates" that were "moderated" by screaming liberals, says to me that Fred does things on HIS terms, not those of Liberals and the MSM. I like that about him for sure. The Republican candidates who took part in the "debates" lost stature in my eyes because they were so willing to let the opposition set the terms.

>I was a Hunter supporter until very recently. The venom his fames esxhibited toward other candidates convenced me that he was going to have a steep hill to clim in thei campaign. Keep up the good work.<

We are sorry to lose you, trisham, but it looks like you jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. The aloevera plant should be on the windowsill. You will always be welcome back.

I agree. The process is incredibly front loaded this time and the candidates will likely be decided within a couple of weeks of South Carolina. And there’s been talk of New Hampshire moving to December if any other early states try to move up, which would make it even worse.

All I can say is, this story was printed way to early.

Six months from now, Say February of next year or so, if Fred has not decalaired, it might be valid, now it's just a silly story.

I think the article is right. I think he might be too late.

I think if he does not announce by Labor Day he is finished.
