It's weird to have the name Joe Namath and the word "grandpa" in the same sentence, but there it is.
Football legend Namath, the 1970s sex symbol and fur-wearing pop culture icon, has been made a grandfather with the birth of a little girl to his little girl.
Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath visits with his new granddaughter, Natalia, and her mom, Olivia, and Natalia's Aunt Jessica (right). Natalia was born May 21 at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Grandpa Joe says he's 'very happy.'
Olivia Namath, 16, quietly gave birth to Natalia Namath on May 21 at Good Samaritan Hospital in WPB. Both mom and baby are doing fine.
Broadway Joe deemed himself "very happy" when Page Two caught up with him at his home in Tequesta to ask about his granddaughter. Wearing only a T-shirt and shorts, the overly tanned Namath quieted his four dogs, including a Weimaraner and a Chihuahua, on the steps of his Intracoastal home before flashing a huge Pepsodent smile.
"There are some things in life that are wonderful, and this is one of them," the 64-year-old former New York Jets QB and actor said. He transformed a wing of his home, in the Bay Harbor neighborhood, for Olivia and baby Natalia. "I'm just happy that everyone's healthy."
He declined to answer more questions.
Olivia is Joe Willie's youngest child with ex-wife Tatiana, whom in divorced in 1999. They have another daughter, 21-year-old Jessica.
Joe Namath is mostly known for guaranteeing a victory in Super Bowl III in 1969 against the overwhelming favorites, the Baltimore Colts. The guarantee quickly entered NFL lore, and Namath was among the era's most prolific pitchmen and TV analysts.
Namath, whose love for New York's nightlife was legendary, is semiretired after a boozy sideline TV appearance during a 2003 game in which he put the moves on female reporter Suzy Kolber.
“Looks like his beautiful daughter got pregnant and instead of getting an abortion to avoid embarrassing her famous dad and ruining her life, she decided to give birth. Good for her and I am sure the baby will do very well.”
Perfectly stated! Right or wrong, pregnancies without benefit of marriage have been around since Hector was a pup. In my senior year(in the 60’s) at a small Catholic girl’s high school in Miami, there were no less than 6 pregnancies out of a class of 100. No one was blatant about their condition, but there were whispers and we were all pretty shocked, I can tell you. Like it or not things have changed and, while marriage and babies are the ideal combination, no one is very shocked anymore. I’m just happy that another healthy and wanted child has been brought into the world.
Well, if the father is the nearby 19-year-old crystal meth addict/thief, I give Namath’s ex credit for getting the baby out of that environment and trying to raise the child in California.
Edwin Baker, age 19, is the name of the father listed on the birth certificate. An Edwin Baker, 19, of nearby Jupiter, Fla., has been arrested three times in the past year on charges of possession of crystal methamphetamine, grand theft and burglary.
As you point out, there is one silver lining in this cloud.
But note how the ready availability and acceptance of abortion has driven down our standards. Yes, it is good that she did not abort her child. However, it is not good for unmarried teenagers to be having babies.
Unlike you, I am not sure that the baby will do very well. On every measure, children raised without fathers are at a great disadvantage in life. Perhaps Namath's money and the influence of his ex-wife will shield the child from some of the worst effects of fatherlessness; but it is not an optimal situation.
Having a baby out of wedlock is better than aborting your child in the same way that breaking your arm is better than breaking your neck.
Perhaps Joe didn’t set a sterling example for his kids with his early life, but thank God the child was born instead of aborted.
I wonder how many abortions were performed as a result of Joe’s earlier lifestyle? It’s pure speculation, but perhaps Joe convinced his beautiful young daughter not to abort his beautiful grandchild out of sense of previous loss.
Either way, a child is born and that is cause to rejoice. Let’s wish them well.
Nope, I caught this:
Olivia Namath, 16, quietly gave birth to Natalia Namath on May 21 at Good Samaritan Hospital in WPB. Both mom and baby are doing fine.
I’m guessing I didn’t see anything about the FATHER of the baby, but with the mother being 16 (YIKES), I’m sure it’s not ‘one of those things that happens’.
My criticism is of the REPORTER for not even inquiring into “Who’s the Daddy?” I bet just about everybody had this question on their minds yet not one mention of the Dad. It is like when David Letterman talked about the birth of his daughter without mentioning the mother.
Namath is supporting his daughter and her child - good for him. If his daughter made a mistake at least she has a loving father with means to help her thru what might otherwise be a tough situation.
What’s missing here is the parents of the thousands of girls who must have abortions because they have neither a father or mother willing to help them thru a pregnancy at a young age and instead decide to use abortion as birth control.
You're assuming facts not in evidence and obviously missed the following:
"He declined to answer more questions."
“It is like when David Letterman talked about the birth of his daughter without mentioning the mother.”
David Letterman has a SON. and why is it anyones business who the father is?
FUnnie but the NY Daily News was able to get the Daddy info.
Okay, a son. But when Letterman discussed the birth on the air, the mother was notably NOT mentioned.
maybe she doesnt want notoriety? and once again...what business is it of ours really who the mother is? or who the father is? ...
I wonder if Joe is strug-uh-ling with being a grandpa?
The Bama Nation welcomes Broadway Joe’s granddaughter to the world! RTR
I volunteer to help Aunt Jessica catch up and have a baby of her own.
