CONCORD U.S. Attorney Thomas Colantuono, four federal immigration agents and three police chiefs warned Tuesday that a proposed bill would block state and local law enforcement officials from going after suspected terrorists who were also illegal immigrants.
Colantuono said the state might also risk the loss of up to $200,000 that local communities and the state get from the federal government for detaining foreign-born residents unlawfully in this country.
It is unrealistic in the way law enforcement operates in the 21st century in the wake of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Colantuono said.
The bill, as written, would be a disaster.
The legislation (HB 404) introduced by Rep. Lily Mesa, D-Manchester would prohibit state and local police from detaining or arresting anyone whose sole offense is the violation of federal immigration laws.

It is amazing how much harm can be inflicted in a short time when Dems control the statehouse.
I shudder to think of the consequences of turning the White House over to a Dem, or a liberal like Giuliani.
Any State that actively stands in the way of federal law should lose funding. That and the Feds should send hundreds of immigration officers to blanket the state and snare a lot of the criminals who come in. Of course neither will ever happen because both Congress and the President have no interest in solving this problem.
Just a little dhimmi dry run in a quaint New England town!
Local county law enforcement used to have a way of dealing with undesirables. They would escort them the the county line and let the next county deal with them. Most of the time they would warn the next door county that they had visitors. Somethings about the good old days really were good.
Which is what DEMOCRAT Rep. Lily MESA is demanding in the form of this bill. Face it folks, democrats are on the side of terrorsts, even at their own peril.
Agree, and I would say that is the LEAST that should be done. States cannot go around willy nilly defying Immigration Laws, which are in the purview of the Federal Government.
I am going to try to stay optimistic. I am encouraged that federal immigration agents are blasting the plan. And from reports I have read, Bush is now going to address this crisis in the right way, IMO, by fining employers heavily. I am not necessarily against a border fence, but I think if we make it extremely difficult for an illegal to get a job, financially risky for a business to knowingly employ one, and illegal to provide taxpayer funded services (like K-12 education), the problem would be greatly reduced.
And how are they paying for that 18% increase? Are they encouraging more drinking, more smoking, or are people staying in hotels more?
Is there a pool going on when NH will get an income tax?
This is insane. It's also aiding, abetting and promoting the breaking of federal law
Bush wants to change the sheeple thoughts on Comprehensive Reform by showing them the results with crying kids on TV with mom and dad being deported.
Enough of that and the sheeple will let them stay.
Sadly, I think you are right. This is how the slime ball Governor Lynch, as soon as he got his D majority in the state house operates. Sign a budget that increases spending to such an extent that the existing, property tax based revenue stream cannot possibly support it.
Then, a year or two down the road, when the inevitable fiscal crisis occurs, that smiling phony Governor of ours will proclaim that he is, reluctantly, making the politically difficult, but fiscally prudent decision to propose a broad based tax (my bet is on a sales tax.)
His upcoming Proclamation will be completely disingenous, of course, since he himself has planted the seeds to create the upcoming budget crunch. I fear he has snookered the people of NH, but am hopeful that his dishonesty will be on display for all to see.
Actually it should be invaded, its government overthrown and its officials arrested, and martial law imposed until a new, more responsible government is elected.
Hell, it worked in the South, right?
Swell! I just made an offer on a house in Amherst! We are moving up there in two weeks.
;-)
Personally, I would start by prosecuting any state legislator that signs a law which attempts to overcede federal immigration laws before calling for civil war...
It’s called “ REVOLUTION”

I agree. A huge part of the solution is cutting off their access to resources and services in this country. Its like cleaning up your kitchen to solve a roach problem.
Souhegan High School (in Amherst) is as PC liberal as your best Massachusetts government school.
Since my kid was a teenager when my family moved here, we avoided that town, though it is a very pretty town.
I like the analogy, and will now steal it. ;-)
