KHAHTANIYA, Iraq – Five vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices detonated in the villages of Khahtaniya and al Jazeera, in western Nineveh province, killing approximately 60 Iraqi civilians and injuring an unknown number, Aug. 14.

Four vehicles were reported to have entered a crowded bus station and exploded as soon as they were inside of Khahtaniya, a small town about 45 miles southwest of Tal’Afar in the Sinjar region, killing approximately 30 people.

Another VBIED detonated in a residential area of al Jazeera, southwest of Khahtaniya. According to Coalition Forces in the area, there were at least 30 people killed and 15 to 20 homes destroyed, with an unknown number of casualties trapped under debris.

Soldiers from 3rd Iraqi Army Division, in conjunction with CF from 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, and 4th Squadron, 6th Air Cavalry Regiment, quickly arrived on the scene, and are assisting the injured and evacuating casualties to both Tal’ Afar and Sinjar Hospitals. 3rd IA has provided earth-moving equipment and supplies to the area.

“This attack once again demonstrates the terrorist’s method of targeting innocent Iraqi civilians, often women and children, in an attempt to divide the country and drive a wedge between the people,” said Maj. Rodger Lemons, operations officer, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “They will not succeed.”

The incidents are currently under investigation.

VBIED = the dumbest acronym I’ve seen in a while.

How about “car bomb?”

bummer.
Simultaneous bombings reeks of A.Q. Attacking a peaceful area seems like their style as well. Someone wants the Kurds to walk away from the rest of Iraq? This was fairly close to both Turkey and Iran. Hmm. Not to say the Saudi’s couldn’t have gotten these guys that far north. With AQ, I guess it doesn’t really matter where the suicider originated from. If violence was directed towards the area this attack was launched from (assuming not in Iraq), would peace start to prevail in Iraq?

Let’s all make sure we keep on that residential area of al Jazeera, southwest of Khahtaniya.

Absolutely. Riduculous, pompous acronyms like VBIED, trivialise these horific things.

I read it as a Very Bad Improvized Explosive Devise. Guess I’m still working with the elementary screen.
