The congressional retirement season has started, and it appears former Speaker Dennis Hastert may soon announce his own plans to ride off into the sunset.
The Illinois Republican sent supporters a letter over the weekend asking them to join him for a speech this Friday at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville, Ill.
The letter does not say whether he'll run for reelection in 2008 or announce his retirement, but speculation skews heavily toward retirement. And neither Hastert nor his aides have done much to dispel the widely accepted opinion back home that he'll call it quits. For example, an aide did not respond to an e-mail about the weekend letter.

I’ve been sending torn up checks out to the RNC and NRSC, State GOP, etc., whenever they email, call, or write for a donation. I say, sure, how much? OK, then I write it, tear of the account numbers, rip it up, and mail it off.
I’d rather give my money to support FRed, Hunter and, Tancredo’s campaigns.

However, the only way is to amend the US Constitution - as was triggered by FDR's fourth term. Otherwise the courts will say that a mechanism exists to achieve the same obejctive - those things called elections.
Term limits should apply to both houses of Congress along with their staff personnel.
Jim Oberweis has frequently attended Minutemen gatherings. During the Summer of 2006, he was in AZ with the Minutemen patrol. The IL Minutemen would be pro-Oberweis more than anything.
Oberweis’s past campaign ads were poor. In his attempt to portray himself as pro-border security, the ads fail to insert the word “illegal” when talking about immigrants. By omitting that word, Oberweis was easily tarnished as a mean spirited old man.
The Republicans need to go with a new theme: Clean house and senate with new, non-beltway politicians. Get x-military (good fighting ones), strong records of service, and lots of appeal, smarts & money. Long term congressmen and women need to be retired. I heard that Jeff Beatty is a strong R candidate considering pulling out the rug from John F’ng Kerry in the senate next year. We need a list started of all good candidates and send money directly to them...
Ex-military alone is no guarantee of success. We just need to get good people, period. It’s too bad that Beatty has no party apparatus in MA to help him. He’ll be lucky to get more than 30% of the vote in that cesspool, and that’s the real tragedy.
A fat crooked ineffectual empty suit is retiring, don’t know why he’d leave a body where he’s so at home.
Hastert, another go-along-to-get-along country club Republican in the finest Robert Michael tradition. Hired a former Red China lobbyist for his senior staff (Nancy Dorn, I believe).

A few months ago, the local TV station had on some tool who was whining about how a law that would put a notation on a driver's license identifying the holder as an illegal alien was wrong, because it would make them feel like -- and I quote -- "second-hand citizens."
I wanted to vomit.

Or the Saudi's, who bow to nobody when it comes to luring our corrupt politicians into "friendly behavior" while in office, then when they retire, making certain they are suitably rewarded with consulting gigs or high paying jobs with Saudi-friendly firms.

I still don't care for him. As I recall, he was with Bush on nearly all of the major blunders. He was always an advocate for "compromise" by word and by deed. On issues where the GOP should have held firm, Denny was the one the Rats always approached for a compromise, and there were too many. What really did it for me, though, was the appointment of that Red China lobbyist for a senior staff position with sensitive security clearance requirements. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now.

It is difficult for the Speaker of the House to go against the President who is in the same party. I don't know what you are referring to specifically about compromises with the Democrats. Hastert had a tough job just managing the small Rep majority in the House, especially keeping the Northeast RINOs onboard for key legislation.
Hastert has bucked the WH. He voted for the 2005 Border Security bill. He voted against McCain-Feingold. What other blunders are you referring to? He did vote for prescription drugs.
I haven't run it down yet, but I seem to recall that he also voted for some of the earlier amnesty/immigration bills.
I understand that you support him, and agree that his lifetime ACU rating is quite good. I simply have the feeling, accumulated over a number of years, that he either caved or was on the wrong (Bush) side of several important issues. Conservatives just couldn't count on him.
Neither of us is right or wrong, and neither of us will persuade the other. Perhaps we should leave it at that.
