The congressional retirement season has started, and it appears former Speaker Dennis Hastert may soon announce his own plans to ride off into the sunset.
The Illinois Republican sent supporters a letter over the weekend asking them to join him for a speech this Friday at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville, Ill.
The letter does not say whether he'll run for reelection in 2008 or announce his retirement, but speculation skews heavily toward retirement. And neither Hastert nor his aides have done much to dispel the widely accepted opinion back home that he'll call it quits. For example, an aide did not respond to an e-mail about the weekend letter.

There’s no doubt in my mind, Hastert is walking away.
Chris Lauzen is the right person to succeed him. Hopefully, the local conservative grass roots will rally around him.
I can’t say I’ll be sad to see him gone!
Hastert is one of the reasons the G.O.P. lost a majority
His can’t we all get along routine was just pathetic.
Which Republican succeeds him is important. Grass roots conservative need to get involved in primaries for vacant seats in strongly Republican territory.
Given that IL seems to have turned deep,*deep*,blue are there any truly safe seats left there?
Ditto.......
Just so very tired of RINOs. I swear the G.O.P. with turds like my senator Mel Martinez is losing me and my vote.
Just where is a good conservative to turn to?
I’m not voting for the better of two evils anymore.
NO MORE RINOs.
Last Saturday, Chris Lauzen had his annual picnic fundraiser. His picnics are highest attended conservative meetings in the Du Page / Kane County area. The conservative grassroots will line up behind Lauzen. The problem is the local Minutemen group likes Oberweis and may smear Lauzen for being pro-amnesty just because he’s of Mexican desecent.
CSPAN played a LaRaza panel on immigration over the weekend. Two of Martinez’s staff members were on the panel. One was so radical and indignant she could have been on the LaRaza staff. One of her comments was that actions against illegals such as those taken in Prince William County VA are “not acceptable” and that “we” (meaning Hispanics, I assume) have the numbers to make this clear.
I suspect you would feel even worse about Martinez if you had seen this.
don’t let the door hit you in the arse, Dennis...
“Hastert was a stand-up guy once upon a time.”
just like the rest of the clowns in D.C.
they wear out their welcome!
Solution: TERM LIMITS!
now lets see if there are any candidates running next year who have the stones to initiate a bill for term limits.
I don’t know that I can think any lower then I do about Mel Martinez.
During the amnesty bill debate I wrote this turd and told him I wouldn’t vote again for him and would work against any reelection he may undertake if he supported it.
He sent me a request for a donation and touted his work for the R,N,C, then he worked to give my money to illegals.
No doubt in my mind, either. It's a solidly Republican district and while a contentious primary may make it interesting I don't see even that causing the Democrats to pick it up.
Same with LaHood. Illinois 18th is a downstate district around Peoria. Large rural population. Should be easy for the GOP to keep that seat as well.
That old RINO fraud needs to get a new hobby. Move to Florida and take up golf.
William Jefferson, D-LA is deeply saddened.
Lauzen is pro-border security. He was one of the few IL legislators to vote against in-state tuition for illegals.
