If a white guy had been arrested for the same crimes, he would likely have made bail. That's not the issue here. The issue is that as an illegal facing deportation, it was pretty close to a foregone conclusion that he would skip, and he should have been held without bail.
Why was he in this country for 16 years as illegally?

There's no good answer for that one. He might have stayed below the radar for 15 of those 16 years, but once caught and in custody for a serious crime, he should never have been granted bail. Aren't judges supposed to consider risk of flight? Isn't there abundant empirical evidence that illegals released on bail don't show up for trial? "Dog" Chapman can't track down all of them.

Honestly, I haven't heard from either of them in a few years. I don't know much about Newark Mayor Cory Booker, other than that he's black and a Democrat, but in this case, he's acted sanely and responsibly.
Sharpton, Jackson or any other rabble-rousers would have get involved over the mayor's strenuous objections, which wouldn't do them or the community any good. They might not give two s---s about the community, but the first part is a calculation they can make without pencil or paper.

If four students had been lined up and shot execution-style by four police officers, there would be a MASSIVE outcry -- and should be. If they'd been four Anglo punks instead of four Latino punks, there would probably have been a knee-jerk reaction, but the likely outcome would have been the same as it is.
Unlike with the Don Imus case which received 24 news coverage for 5 days, barely a peep has been said about this case.
I have to wonder what news sources you're following. It's the #2 story on CNN's US page, despite the fact that the story is from Friday and there have been no developments in the case over the weekend. Google News has 589 articles from August 10 alone.
It's a front-page story in today's New York Times. I don't watch TV news every day -- I usually prefer my news online -- but I haven't seen any newscast in the last several days that didn't include an update. And that in spite of a pretty busy news environment, for a weekend, with the ongoing mine disaster, damage to the Shuttle, and the death of Merv Griffin.
If this story is getting "barely a peep," what do you want, someone to stand at the foot of your bed and shout it at you?
